They're Taking Over

"So, you seem to be doing well for just waking up." Ryder stated after a moment of silence.

"Yeah, my mom said that too." I slowly took my hand back, and grabbed my phone. I didn't feel comfortable holding his hand just yet.

"Listen," he said. "we really do need to talk. There's something on my mind that I need to get off my chest." I didn't say anything. I just kept a blank stare on my face. He started talking, "I know you don't want a relationship right now, and I'm sorry I keep pulling you in my arms. I just really like you, I can almost say that I love you."

"I really don't know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything. That's why I'm talking." He was keeping his composure pretty well. "I want us to be at least friends."

"I don't see a problem with that." I smiled. As if on cue, my mother walked back in.

"That was a wonderful talk, wasn't it?"

"Don't start with the sarcasm, Clara." I replied with a hint of attitude. She didn't say anything back.

"How was it?" Sophie asked. "Sleeping, I mean. Did you dream?"

"Not really." I lied. "If I did, then I don't remember." I knew exactly what I dreamed of, but why I did is a mystery. Since you don't know, I dream for reasons. I remembered every dream that I ever dreamed. The doctors call it something that I can't say because I can't remember the word myself, but they say my dreams are almost visions.

"That's a lie. You don't forget dreams." Clara said.

"There's always a first." I contradicted. She made a groan and rolled her eyes.

There was about an hour of silence. Clara went to get clothes for me so I could leave, and Ryder went to work. Sophie was still writing in her notebook, it was almost filled now that she's had it for almost a year.

I was watching the news, it was mostly about Germany bombing more countries. It worried me a little, but I can't really do anything about it.

Just then, the power went out and a nurse came in. "I'm sorry about the power outage, we're moving all the patients to the basement." She had brown hair that was put up in a bun, but she didn't have any makeup on. She looked to be in her late twentie's.

"Why?" Sophie asked.

"The mayor just called and said there was going to be a bombing close to here and it's a safety percaution that we do this. I'm not sure why they turned the power off now, we need the elevator's." she started ranting to herself.

"I was supposed to be let out today though. What about now?"

"Until we can get to the files, we can't let you out. Hopefully things won't get too hairy and we can wait about an hour or two to get things working again. You'd have to stay a day later, at most."

"We need all patients who are in the ICU to head to the basement. The power is on for those patients. Any other patients need to use the stairs. They will wait on the first floor until further notice."

The nurse took out my IV and directed me to the door. Once I stood, my knees gave out. Sophie helped me up and led me to the door. My left arm was supported over her shoulders and she grabbed my right hand, giving me balance. I noticed that she gave her notebook to the nurse.

Downstairs, we sat on a few seats. I felt tired from walking, considering I haven't walked in a couple days, and Sophie looked about as tired as I was. We both sat silently, waiting for directions.

"Want to leave?" I asked Sophie. "I'm tired of waiting and I'm worried about Ryder."

"How would we pull it off?"

"The doors don't have the power on them, so they wouldn't know I left. We can just walk out."

"You're such a genious." she smiled and stood. The nurses were covered by patients and family who had questions.

The outside air felt great on my skin. I embraced it while I could and we started walking. "We should probably go to my house first. I need to shower for a minute and get some new clothes. Then we should run to Ryder." By now, I was used to walking. It hurt a bit, but I fought through it.

"You should hurry up. I can hear planes far away." I sped up a little. The planes then appeared. I heard explosions in the background.

This was going to be an interesting trip.
