(START TRANSMISSION) BANNED: Big Atlas of L.A. Pools. The 2013 atlas of the 81,214 pools between the Hollywood Hills and San Pedro has been banned from the Internet by the Greater Los Angeles Security Agency (GLASA)/Autoridad de Seguridad de Los Angeles (ASLA).
The ban follows a series of skateboard park and backyard swimming pool bombings attributed to the anti-bioengineering group, STAKE.
In an official statement issued by GLASA, spokesman Luis Flores said, "Skateparks and skateboarding in backyard swimming pools have a long history in California and have served as the inspiration for skateboarders worldwide. GLASA promotes the free exchange of information, however, we are concerned about the safety of our young people and for this reason have pulled these directories from the Web. We continue to investigate all threats and welcome community information in stopping the actions of SPAKE and related groups."
While apparently no connection exists between the Big Atlas of LA Pools and the bombings, security experts have expressed concerns that the maps could be used by groups targeting skateparks and drained swimming pools where skateboarders practice their sport.
In the statement, GLASA indicated it would also request the removal from the Net of the Greater Atlas of All California Pools (GAACP) and suggested technology companies begin masking backyard pools and skateparks from their publicly available maps. Also banned, 2013’s “The L.A. Swimmer,”a jarring, voyeuristic swoosh of a ride across Los Angeles showing quick glimpses of backyard pools. (TRANSMISSION ENDS)
