Nina POV:

It was a normal day at Woodlands Creek high school. So just like every morning, I dragged myself out of my car, sighing. As I made my walk towards the building I caught sight of Nick, the boy who had a MAJOR crush on me. He was always smiling, and trying to touch me, and it creeped me out. And besides, I was in love with his bestfriend.

Not really in love. Just was totally very interested in his best friend. And yes, that makes me seem like a jerk, but you like who you like. And before anyone goes and judges me, let me tell you what happened.

First off, I'm a sophmore in high school, and Nick and his two friends are freshman. How did I get involved with freshman boys? Easy, were all in 4th period band together. Anyways, I met them in the beginning of the year, and for a long time I thought we were all just friends. But then things got fun. Nick admitted to liking me, and several times I tried to shut him down, nicely. And then after his confession, I tried to sort through why I didn't like him, and who I really liked. Well, as much as this makes me seem like a real jerk, I realized who I did like. Ethan. His best friend, which made me realize there was no way that could ever happen. Because I know they have some bro code, and as much as Nick's obssesed with me, Ethan would never do that to him.

But what gets me the most? I know Ethan likes me. I mean he's never said it, but he watches me, and he listens to everything I say, like he cares about every word that comes out of my mouth. So sure, things are complicated, but what isn't?

I sighed again as I reached the door before Nick, hurrying inside. I made my way over to my circle of friends, Aria and Ellie.

"Hey Guys" I dropped my bags on the floor and smiled.

"Hey, do you want to go get a biscuit with me?" Aria asked.

"Yeah, let's g-" The loud bell ringing cut off my words and I looked up confused. The clock said 8:05. The bell was supposed to ring at 8:10.

"Do we have early schedule?" Aria asked confused.

"I don't know. But let's head for first period." I picked up my bag and Aria and Ellie followed me.

"So" Ellie started when we were all sitting in our seats. "How's you and Ethan doing?" A blush quickly formed on my face before I could stop it.

"Awww. Nina is BLUSHING." Ellie whispered to Aria. I leaned over smacking them both.

"Shut up you two." I scolded. When they erupted into giggles I scowled. Then my teacher quieted us.

"We got a e-mail to have you guys completely quiet by 8:10. There's supposed to be a announcement." Mrs. Burns told us to be quiet a few times before everyone stop talking. When the head speaker came on everyone paid attention.

"Good Morning, Woodlands Creek. I need everyone to listen to what I am about to say, and pay close attention please. I will only say it once. And before I began my speech please turn on your TV's." There was a brief pause, and Mrs. Burns flicked on the TV. There was Mrs. Stiener, our assistant principal, but the voice was coming from off the stage.

"Every school and business in Amercia are being given the same meesage. The human race is no longer in control. From now on you follow our rules or you die. On your way out you will be given a book on what you must do. You will have one daybefore the rules take place. Enjoy that time. And now, so we prove our point. We will show you our ability to take your lives with no remorse."

I only could watch what happened next because of my fear. Mrs. Stiener was grabbed by something and her screams echoed through the classes and halls. When her lifeless body fell to the ground, all hell broke lose. People started to scream while others ran for the doors. When I looked around, Aria and Ellie were pulling me up.

"Let's go, Nina. The book they talked about, we need it." I nodded at them and we shuffled down the hallway with other students. When we reached the main entrance, two large men were throwing small books into our hands. When I got up to the line, the light book was thrown and Aria, Ellie, and I shuffled out.

I grabbed my keys out of my pocket, and made my way over to my car. Aria and Ellie were parked next to me.

"I'm going to go get my brother."

"Read the book Nina." I looked at Aria was staring at me warningly. I looked down at her empty hands.

"Where's yours?"

"I don't need one. You'll understand later. But remember something, until I see you next." Aria stopped and smiled briefly. "Our friendship is real. I love you Nina. Your my bestfriend. I'll do everything I can to keep you safe."

I stumbled into the car and slowly pulled out of the school parking lot. I was in a daze. And what did Aria mean?

I rubbed my head quickly before making the short drive to my little brother's school. He was in the 8th grade, at the middle school down the road. When I got to the car rider lane, I saw my small brother standing there.

"Spencer, get in the car. Come on." I yelled through the window. When my brother saw me, he ran and jumped in.

"Nina, I'm scared."

"I know. We'll read this when we get home. Buckle up."

My brother did as he was told and clutched the book. When we pulled up to the house my phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Nina, are you home?

"Yes, Spencer and I are here."

"Good get inside. Your father and I won't be home for a while."

"Are you okay?"

"We will be perfectly fine. Get inside, and read the book."

"Okay, Mom I love you."

"I love you too. Tell Spencer I love him too."

"Bye" I ended the call and rushed my brother inside.

"Let's read this" I said dropping onto the couch and flipping the book open.
