I was listening to Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" last night, and the lyrics struck me.

I'm 23 now, will I live to see 24? The way things is going I don't know

And that is exactly what I want this rewrite of Vae Victus [MATURE VERSION] to be.

What if Kefira Levi did not live in a happy family with four brothers and loving parents? What if Kefira Levi did not have a special power? What if I throw a little girl to a pack of wolves and see if she will return leading the pack?

There is no substitute for size and strength in a fight. Realistic fighting is nothing like the TV shows or movies. Kefira Levi was a 5 feet 4 inches, 130 pounds, woman. I can give her all the martial arts skills in the world and it will not turn her into Jason Bourne. The only way she can beat someone twice her size is if they are ten times an amateur, and those are not the kind of enemies I want to throw in her way. Not as the main villain anyway.

So in the original version, I gave Kefira Levi a 'superpower': superhuman speed. But in this version, I will take that away. She will survive in the violent world of rough and dangerous men but she will not walk away unscathed. It will be bloody and brutal and she will walk away victorious for one reason and one reason only: she is a survivor

Whether this version will have an audience of one or many, I think I will enjoy writing it. In this version, I will remain to fiddle around in the first person point of view because of one amateur hypothesis of mine: 'Novels as a medium for entertainment will never be able to compete visually with TV shows and movies.' No matter how much 'show, don't tell' action scenes I throw in (and I  hope to throw a lot in this book), at the very end, the only advantage that books have — despite being one person's solitary work as opposed to a million dollar group endeavor— is the ability to get intimate inside a character's mind. That's all.

This is one broken soul that I will try to 'mind-meld' with; so it will be a joy-ride for me. I hope it will be for you too.
