Dawson's POV:

I woke up with a bitter thought, and it was that the first day of school was approaching. Not only approaching, but today.

I did the routine I've done for the past 10 years, scooped up a granola bar and left for school.

In the car ride there, I wondered if this school year would be any different, but I figured it wouldn't. Just the same people and the same routines. It depresses me to think about it.

When I got to the school, there was no one there, so I sat down underneath a shady tree and began to read my favorite book, The Lost Hero.

Some say it's a children's book, but I disagree. I've read the series countless times, but I never get bored of the action- packed novel.

After I've read about 10 pages, people started arriving. My best friend Michael spotted me and headed toward me. Michael was a human giraffe with two feet. He had dirty blonde hair and gray eyes. He's also a huge nerd who had a thing for woman. I mean, alot of guys do, but geez, this guy had an obsession. The funny part is that all of the girls in our school hated him because of it.

When he sat down, he said, "Hey man."

I didn't look up from my book when I dully responded, "Hi, Michael."

"I'm not going to speak unless I have your undivided attention."

"You just spoke."

"Come on, D, lighten up. It's the first day of school, and that means the ladies are looking extra fine."

"You say that every year."

"Well, I think this year will be different. Hey, who's that?"

I looked up and saw a girl get out of her car and walk towards the path leading to the front door. She was by far the prettiest girl I have ever seen, and I knew right then I've never seen her before.

She looked toward the school lawn to find everyone quiet and staring at her. I quickly turned away before she saw me, pretending to be engrossed in my book. Geez, I thought to myself, that was a close one.

When the talking began again I knew she was gone, so I looked at Michael. "I call dibs."

Michael's expression was portraying a mock anger. "That's not fair, I saw her first!"

I laughed at his stupidity, and absently wondered how I could get her to talk to me. A pretty girl like that won't even notice me. I'm nothing good to look at, and that doesn't really help my case.

"So, what are you gonna do?" Michael asked.

"I have no idea, I guess I'll think of something."

As I was thinking about what in the world I was going to do, the first bell rang. I got up and walked with Michael to our lockers, which happened to be right next to each other. That's how we became friends, actually. Freshman year, he came to this school and since our lockers were so close, we eventually became friends.

I looked down at my schedule and figured out that I had Calculus, and headed toward the coresponding room. Yes, I take Calculus and am only a junior. I've got a thing for math, okay?

As I walked to the classroom, I saw the new girl a little ways in front of me, heading toward the same room. My heart skipped a beat. This could be my only chance to talk to her, but what the heck do I say?

When I walked in the door and saw her sitting in the back of the class, reading a book.

I took a seat in the row next to her and took a peek at what she was reading. The Fault in Our Stars. I read that book a year ago. Well, here goes nothing.

I turn toward her. "I love that book you're reading."

She looked up, confused as to who was talking to her. Then after a few seconds, she saw me. "Oh, you've read it?"

She looked at me with these piercing green eyes, and she had long, dark auburn hair that flowed past her shoulders. She was pretty from far away, but man, she was stunning up close.

That's when I realized I'd been staring too long. Oh gosh, what did she say? Oh yeah, if I'd read it. "Yeah, I read it last year, it's amazing."

She smiled, and I thought she couldn't get any prettier. Her eyes scrunched at the corners, and her full lips moved into a perfect arch. "I know, I've read it so many times I can't count anymore. The ending is killer."

I laughed. "Yeah, I was so shocked when I first read it. I see you're around here. What's your name?"

"I'm Alaska. What's yours?"

"I'm Dawson." We shook hands and smiled. By then the final bell had run, and it was time for class.

Alaska's POV:

The first day of calculus had been interesting, especially in the beginning. A boy-a cute one not to mention- had talked to me, and even though I was talking about books, he seemed interested. No guy had ever talked to me about books before, becuase they think they're boring and a waste of time.

He was tall and muscular, and not in a way that it was unappealing. He had dark hair and ocean blue eyes that made time seem like it was standing still. After the conversation we had, I blushed uncontrollably and looked down at my desk, wondering how in the world a guy like that would want to talk to a ordinary girl like me.

After math class had ended, I picked up my books and contintued through the day. Dawson was in my Honors Reading class, but he didn't say hi to me. A couple times I caught him staring, but I think I was mistaken. What was with this guy?

At twelve o'clock it was time for lunch. I packed up my things from the previous class and headed into the lunch room.

My inital thought was where here I was supposed to sit. I didn't have any friends, and I don't really think Dawson counts. We talked only once.

After awkwardly standing in the front of the room looking for a seat, I found a small, empty table in the far corner of the gigantic room. When I got there, I set my textbooks down and took out my lunch and my free-read book. My mom says I needed to be social, but I don't think having a book in my hand is going to scare people off. It didn't scare Dawson.

About 10 minutes had passed when I heard someone clear their throat. I looked up to see Dawson, standing in front of an open seat across from me. "Um, do you mind if I sit here?"

I was startled. "Yeah, of course. Oh, well, no, you can sit here, I just meant- yeah, go ahead." Smooth, Alaska. Real smooth.

He smiled and took a seat. "So.... do you like it here so far?"

"Yeah, the school's nice. I like my classes."

"Have you made any friends?" he asked, his gorgeous blue eyes trained on me.

"Not really. Some guys started to talk to me, but I don't exactly think they wanted to be friends."

An unreadable expression apeared on his face, then disapeared behind a smile.  "Well, I know you'll make some soon enough. You seem nice."

I felt unnecessary heat rise to my cheeks, and I tried my best to push it down. "Thank you, and as do you."

"Until then, I could be your friend. If you want, I mean."

I gave him a grateful smile. "Okay."

Just then, the bell rang and lunch was over. Dawson rose. "Well, I guess I'll see you around?"

"Yeah, see you around." I smiled at him, and he smiled back. Then he turned around and walked away.
