Doubt and Determination

"I can't believe this guy!" I ranted angrily, pacing around the room. "This is the craziest, most unfair decision ever! Why, why would he do this?!"

"You can't seriously expect to be able to solve this problem, Harmony," Claire muttered monotonously, leaning back and crossing her legs.  "I'm telling you, this is the decision that the mayor made, as well as some of the most renowned people in this city!"

"Thanks for the support," I replied sarcastically, flipping my chestnut hair out of my face.  "Don't you know how big of a deal this is?! Once Kinkleton starts this project, thousands of animals are going to lose their homes; who knows if they're even going to be treated correctly? No one knows what's going to happen to them, you can't just go destroying environments for our person benefit! There has to be another way!"

"Harmony, calm down," Claire retorted, her boredom evident in her body language. Facial expression blank, inattentive posture, it was clear she thought I was talking gibberish.  "Don't say I didn't warn you when everyone looks at you strangely," my friend replied doubt laced in her voice.  "What an insanely unreasonable idea, I can't imagine you're thinking of taking this mission on all by yourself! I mean... just look!"

"Someone has to do something," I scoffed, folding my arms across my chest.  "If no one else is, why not me? I'm just as capable as the next person."

Claire snorted, then took a sip of her lemonade.  Pulling out her cell phone, my presence was instantly ignored. Obviously, I wasn't getting her assistance.

I stared out the window, the speech the mayor had given constantly repeating in my head.  Clearly, everyone was totally on board with the idea that he had proposed, but I knew what would happen once the plan was put into play.

"But wait no more, fellow citizens of Noraida. This idea will be the one to solve all our problems, if I dare say so, and I hope you'll all agree. As a result, to save our homeland, we will be..."

"...removing the nearby forests and relocating animals and other wildlife to enhance our economy."

Animals losing their homes... trees being cut down... forests destroyed... was nobody concerned like I was?

Blinded by fear and determination, I clenched my fists and set my jaw.  It was decided. I, Harmony Singer of Noraida, was going to solve this problem once and for all, without any harmful solution. No matter what, I could do this. I would confront the mayor and bring my concerns to him.

Little did I know, how many complicated obstacles I was going to face.
