"Twenty years ago" Said the man, "I had dinner here with Jimmy Wells. He was my best friend and the best fellow in the world. He and I grew up here in New York, like two brothers. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the west. I was going to find a job and make a great success. Jimmy wanted to stay in New York, where he already had a job, which he loved it. He never told me which job it was, but he said his goal in life was that he wanted to help a lot of people. Since that night I haven't seen him, but we agreed to meet twenty years later, outside the restaurant where we had our last dinner."
The cop that was listening to the man talking about his friend, took a look at the old building, which he remembered when there used to be one of the best dinner places in New York, until some years ago.
"It looks like sometimes, things actually change" Said the cop, without stop staring at the old building, watching how the raindrops fell on the bricks, and making its way to the pavement. "Which job do you think he is doing, even if you don't know?"
"It's an answer I have been wondering all this years, but if he didn't want to tell me since the beginning, it must be something really important for him. I know him as the palm of my hand, or at least I think so. It has been a long time, but I won't lose faith for seeing my best friend one last time" He said it with hope, looking at the black sky, and the tiny drops that ended on his face.
"I think I know your friend." Said the cop "If you follow me, you might find what you are looking for"
"Sir, I thank your help, but I think I can manage to find him by myself"
"You think so?"
"Absolutely. Like I said before, I know him as the palm of my hand." He looked at his watch, to make sure that it wasn't the time the mistake that his friend hadn't arrived yet "Ten o'clock. The time when I said bye to him, but knew it wasn't going to be the last one. I know it. He might just need some more minutes"
"Are you just gonna stand still in the rain, waiting for your friend"
"Sir cop" Said Bob, looking at him, raising his head because of the height difference between him and the cop "You might not know what a strong friendship means, but for me, it means everything. He is like my brother, and would feel horrible if something happens to him."
"If you knew him as your brother, you should have known all this time that he is right in front of you" He took out his ID card, and showed him his true identity.
"James C. Wells" He went staring for a long time the card, and then looked at him, or at least he thought. He found himself not outside the old building anymore, but in the cemetery. It was all an illusion he had.
He was in front of a tomb, with Jimmy's name written in it. (1964-1984). He started to remember everything, the last goodbye, and the murder that happened and ended with his friend's life. He loved his friend, but no one knew that murder would happen inside a great frienship. He remembered the actual reason why he headed West.
"I said I was going to take revenge on them." Said Bob, knowing no one would listen to him but a thousand souls in the cementery "And I just wanted to say that the wait for it has ended."
