I receive a message from my friend asking where I am and If I’m going to school I reply with “no, dad was in a accident”
The word ‘accident’ is such a strange word, sugar coats the whole scenario of the fact that he was hit by a car and went flying in the air for 7 meters where he landed slamming his pelvis on the ground splitting himself in half on the inside.
I continued texting her and a few other friends of mine who were with her in class at the time. It seems by this time the whole school knew what had happened. It was gossip spreading around like wild fire. Its quite scary actually.
Georgia, my aunty, Nan and myself head over to the hospital, the long way as Kooragang Island was closed. My stomach felt empty but yet felt like something was ready to come up. Taking fast heavy breaths didn’t seam to help the way I was feeling.
I have never seen nan or aunty Megan like this before, they both looked brittle and scared, their eyes revealed all. Like their mind was ticking over with so many different scenarios and outcomes for dad, their brother and son. But this is all any of us could do, think and wonder, until we got there and find out for ourselves how he was and how he is going to be.
We finally arrive at the hospital to see mum looking worse than ever, her eyes Rosie red like she has been crying all this time when really I don’t blame her. She sees us and breaks down more while telling us that dad had lost lots and lots of blood and he may not make it. At this time everything happening around me sort of faded away, like it was only me and nothing was happening, like i was in a bubble. I was in shock and disbelief.
We have been sitting in the waiting room in the intensive care unit (ICU) for nearly two ours now, just talking amongst ourselves, telling stories and trying to make the most of the situation. At this stage we all didn’t know what to expect, we didn’t know how bad it really was, we were oblivious. In a way it made it better to deal with but also made it harder to except when we got bad news.
I received more texts from my friends throughout the day “thinking of you”, “I hope your alright” “is everything alright?” All of this didn’t seem like very much but it gave me hope, made me feel like I had support outside of the family and told me how much they really did care. This is where I realized how much I really do love, respect and cherish my friends, each and every one of them.
