The breeze was pleasant as Melody awoke within her home. Spring had arrived only days earlier so there was a fine scent of the flowers the village lived in. Melody is a plain fairy in most others' eyes. She has a small figure, long brown hair with faded purple ends and ordinary facial features. The only differences between her and the other fairies are her eyes and her wings. Her eyes are blueish-gray with a dark ring around the iris, while the other fairies usually have a spectrum containing just about every color but blue. Blue is a rare color to have. Fairies only associate blue with sadness, which they rarely experience. A fairy's wings are as unique as human beings. Fairy wings come in a variety of shapes and colors, and they always function regardless of the weather condition. Melody's wings have the ability, or rather annoyance, of not functioning when it's raining or cold out. They are similar to an emperor butterfly's wings but they are indigo and black instead of black and blue.

"Crap, I'm going to be late!!" Melody cried as she raced to get dressed. Today is Misty High's welcome ceremony and Melody is a part of the welcoming committee. "Why didn't my alarm go off? I set it so I'd have at least an hour to get ready," Melody mumbled to herself as she slipped her uniform on. She grabbed her two rings, a pair of pearl stud earrings and her bag. She looked in the mirror to make sure her necklace hadn't fallen off while she was rushing. Around her neck was a simple, flower shaped locket.

Her mother had given it to her before she died.

Melody laid a hand over it and smiled to herself before she slipped out the door.

Melody got to the school five minutes before the ceremony. She didn't get a moment to breathe before she heard a voice calling out to her. "There you are Mel, did you sleep in again?" Melody turned to see her best friend Evan walking towards her. Evan is a tall, muscular student in Melody's class and they have been best friends since first grade. He has short brown hair, dark green eyes, sharp facial features and large green wings.

"Hahaha very funny Evan. My alarm didn't go off and yes I did set it."

"Well you're lucky you got here when you did, Lily was about to go off had you not shown up."

Lily is the president of the welcoming committee and she's a strict fairy to boot. She has short black hair, purple eyes, stern facial features and small, black wings.

They began heading towards their designated area to keep watch when they were called by none other than Lily. "Speak of the devil..."Evan muttered under his breath as Lily approached them. Melody smiled a little but it quickly faded. "There you are Melody, about time you showed up! What took you so long?!" Lily said in an uptight tone. Melody was about to give her reason when Evan cut her off. "She doesn't have to say anything to you Lily, why don't you go back to whatever it is you were doing and leave us alone!!" Evan is usually a very calm and laid back individual so he rarely ever yells.

When it comes to Melody, however,he is extremely protective of her.

After that was said, Lily scowled and turned on her heels leaving the two to themselves.

Evan looked over at Melody when Lily was far enough away. Melody was shaking and he figured he was the cause of it.

"Mel I'm so..." Before he could finish, Melody turned and hugged him causing them to move back a couple steps. Evan wrapped his arms around her and began to slowly rub her head to calm her down. "Everything is alright now Mel, I'm sorry I had to yell like that. Something about her just sets me off, especially when she targets you the way she does."

Melody mumbled something into his chest. They release each other and stepped back a little.

"What did you say when you were up against my chest?" Evan asked with his head tilted to the side a little.

"I said I'm so grateful to call you my best friend." Melody replied, blushing a little.

"Awww, you're so cute when you blush Mel!" Evan said almost to himself. "What did you call me?" Melody asked.

"Hmm..Oh I didn't call you anything..." Evan replied , crimson spreading across his cheeks and the tips of his ears.

"Guess we're even now huh Evan?" Melody laughed to herself, making him blush even more. "I'll get you back Mel, just you wait."

When Melody stopped laughing, something caught her eye to the left of her. "Um I'll be right back ok? I have to grab my schedule before classes start."

"Alright Mel, I'll be here."

Melody began walking towards the front table to grab her schedule. Once she had received it, she began to head in the direction of the object that caught her eye. It didn't take her long to find what she was looking for. On the ground before her was a broken crystal. It was a blend of different shades of blue. It started dark blue but faded into a gradient and ended with a very pale blue. The end where it is broken is jagged but smooth in some spots. It was if the crystal was calling to Melody, like it only wanted her to find it. It felt familiar somehow...as if it belonged with her.

"Perhaps that's why I saw it from where Evan and I were standing. I've been told that fairy eyes can pick up on objects that are the same color as they are."

Melody picked up the crystal, it felt cold in her hand. Little does she know that the crystal is important to her story and Evan's.
