I abandoned the car somewhere in town and started walking the opposite way. The car could be tracked down so it wasn't safe for me to keep it. I was wandering around town trying to isolate myself as much as possible. I had around 500 dollars with me and a few more that I had been hiding.
I hadn't stop crying since the moment I left. I was broken, homeless, alone and pregnant. Nothing could make it worse right now. People stared at me as they passed by. Ι wrapped the jacket close on my body since October's chill was not in favor of me.
I looked around. I was in an area with very few buildings and very few residents. Deep into my insecurity, I noticed another building. An obviously abandoned, wrecked yet classy looking place. I took a scarf out of my bag and wrapped it around my distinctive looking hair and half of my fave and walked into a store nearby.
“Hi” I said relieved when I felt some heat embracing me.
“Hello” smiled to me a girl around my age. She was black-haired with piercing green eyes and a brow piercing. ‘’Just like Jai’’ I thought and shook my head to let go of his thought. He betrayed me. I grabbed a few chips, chocolates, crackers and bottles of water.
“Nice area. Quiet” I forced a smile but she couldn't see under the scarf.
“Dead I would say. You are the first person to come in in the past 2 hours” she joked and put my stuff in a bag.
“May I ask you something?” I found my courage.
“Sure” she stopped and looked at me. “Building next door. What is it?” I asked.
“Oh, it used to be an orphanage. They shut it down due to a tragic event a long time ago and it’s neglected now” she said and I thanked her.
“See you” I said in a friendly way and something on her face lit up.
“You’ll stay around here?” she asked.
“For a while” I pulled the scarf down to my chin.
“Where?” she smiled.
“Near” I smiled back and waved goodbye.
I walked out and when I made sure no one is watching, I pushed the large gate of the orphanage which was tangled in some strong branches and got in. A small path of rocks led to the large wooden door of the institute. It was so quiet. Some children toys left outside, the playground and the color of the house distributed the passing of time on it. It looked like your average haunted house in horror movies.
I would much rather stay somewhere else but I had no other choices other than to swallow my fear and go for it. The wind lightly moved the rusty swings. I hesitantly reached the door. It was closed but not locked. I took a deep breath and got in. I scanned the place with my eyes. Not a lot I could see in the darkness. I could make out a few heavy red curtains on the windows, blocking out the light. I pulled them away and looked at the now lighted place.
“Oh my God” I whispered. Broken glass, broken and flipped furniture, toys, wallpaper pieces ripped off the wall, blackness on the ceiling.
It brought in my mind that night Jai. The night he woke up and wrecked everything. This was kinda like it. The first time I saw Jai breaking inside. Seeing Jai cry made me realize just how broken he already was. But that doesn't explain him trying to kill me.
I focused back on my work. I found the staircase leading on the top floor. Wooden, unstable and broken at some parts. I used it very carefully.
“It can get worse” I said to myself as I stared at the top floor. There was long, spacious hallway full of doors. It resembled a hospital. How could they even put kids in here? Well maybe the drawings on the walls made it less creepy back then.
I walked along the hall peeking at the rooms right and left. The only not so repulsive room was the last one in which I decided as mine. I put down my backpack in a corner and took off my scarf. It needs too much extra work.
