Chapter 3- Night Terrors
Rini was dreaming.
She was walking around her home- she couldn’t recall where- but it looked like it was empty apart from her. Her toes curled into the ground with each ginger step she took with her tiny feet. She reached a mirror, hung up on the wall, and reached out to touch the cool glass with her fingertips. Small as she was at six years old, she was only able to pick a miniscule section of glass as the very bottom. In frustration she stamped on the ground, and punched the bottom of the mirror. It fell to the ground and shattered into razor sharp fragments. Rini gasped; she didn’t mean to hit it that hard. The next moment, her nose wrinkled in irritation. What was that smell?“Smoke?” she mumbled to herself.
Sure enough, the room was filling slowly with thick, grey smoke, through the bottom of the door frame. It crept up the walls and occupied Rini’s tiny lungs. She hacked a cough, tears in her azure eyes that were muddied by the hazy smoke.
“Mother!”
She flung open the door and ran out of the room and into the main corridor of the house, and there it was. The fire, that is.
A flickering beast, it danced upon the walls with all the deadly vitality of a demon, licking up the soulful possessions of Rini’s family.
“Mother, help!” The monster was coming towards her, trembling, red and white and hot.
“Rini!” Mothers voice.
“Mother!”
“Rini, where are you?” That was the voice of her father. They were on the other side of the monsterous flames, and they couldn’t hear her…
“There’s too much fire!”
Then, their voices, desperate to find her, grew more and more distant, until her tiny ears, amongst all of the destruction, picked up on the sound of footsteps leaving the vicinity. Why? Rini gripped her head in fear, and ran back into the room. It had a window, which she threw open, spluttering.
“Don’t leave me behind!” she cried. “Come back, please!”
But it was no use. She saw the swift figures of her parents, rushing into the night.
“Stop!” Rini yelled. She was sat bolt upright in bed, in a cold sweat.
The terror didn’t stop there. Each shadow on the wall was the fire, everything morphed, and despite her consciousness, Rini watched as the whole apartment burst into unforgivable flames. She didn’t notice when the door to her apartment came open and someone ran in and grabbed her shoulders.
“Get off me!” She squirmed out of the grip, before the person spoke to her.
“Rini. It’s Touya. Touya, remember?” he said sharply.
In that instant, she was dumped back into reality. No, this wasn’t her house, and it wasn’t on fire. She was sixteen, not six, and this was Touya with one hand on her shoulder. The world made itself known around her, and she breathed a sigh of mixed relief and embarrassment.
“You stay there, and let me get you a drink.”
Touya moved to the kitchen area, and started to boil the kettle. As she watched the back of his sandy head, she thought to herself… He was doing this out of concern, right? As she had gathered so far, this guy had real difficult in showing any proper emotion of his own, but tiny hints of kindness seeped through at times. She hadn’t noticed it before, but now as Rini lay in her bed, sweating and scared, she nodded and knew that she had come to the right place. He may have been stubborn, standoffish and awkward, but there was something underneath that surface desperate to fight its way to the top.
