Trying

I walked up the steps to my apartment, shielding my face from the wind. School started in thirty minutes but I didn't want to go. My neighborhood is calm and here, everyone keeps to themselves and keeps quiet. I think that is what I like the most. The only downside is the city bus that comes thirty minutes after it is scheduled to.

I was searching my backpack for my key when I heard a car pull up behind me. With the base so strong that the ground vibrated beneath me, I knew who it was. I rolled my eyes and turned around, facing the black car. The only person I knew that obnoxious this early in the morning is Da'mon.

Da'mon West is a 5'6, lean, caramel, emerald eye devil. He loves the ladies just as much as they love him but lately, it seems he is only out to get me. He is the star of the football team and believe it or not, he is actually intelligent despite his stupid decisions. Don't get me wrong, he is definitely a blessing to my eyes, but I refuse to be that dumb. Not again.

Da'mon got out of his car and walked toward me, smirking. I rolled my eyes but a grin crept on my face anyway.

"Are you back to torture me some more?" I groaned playfully. He chuckled, shaking his head. He stopped a few feet away from me and sat on the hood of his car.

"Nah ma. Besides, it isn't torture if you like it AYA. You know you want me." He slid his hands over his body and I rolled my eyes. I crossed my arms over my chest.

"You still keep trying D. It's been 2 years since the accident. How long until you realize that I don't want you in that way anymore?" I whispered softly, dropping my gaze.

"He would've wanted you to be happy," He immediately fired back, closing the space between us. He tipped my chin up to meet his gaze.

"Why won't you be happy with me?"

I took his hand and removed it, taking a step back. I needed to create space between us. Being so close to him almost makes me cave. He knows how to get to me. My back hit the door.

"I can't. You know I can't. He was your best friend. How can you feel so okay with the thought of us?"

His gaze turned cold as he himself took a step back, almost as if the space I created wasn't enough.

"It is not even like that ma. You know it ain't. You know you were mine first, and I am pretty sure I didn't see you objecting that night."

I took a step forward and slapped him across the face.

"How dare you say that! You know good and well I cared! I still do!"

His eyes darkened. "So why were you with me all those nights? Huh? Was that because you cared for him too?" I shook my head.

"You know what? Just forget it. He is dead so it doesn't matter."

"Yes it does." He nodded, never breaking eye contact with me.

"No it doesn't." I looked away.

"Yes it does. Especially when you keep trying to deny the fact that you are mine. You were mine then, you are mine now." I felt his eyes burn through my skin.

We always had this argument. D and I have dated in the past. I love him. He loves me. I can't negate those facts. He and I didn't work out and I ended up with his best friend, Dre Black. Dre and I were inseparable when D found out that we were together, it tore him to pieces. After Dre and I had started dating, Da'mon still tried to get me back. Dre and Da'mon had got into a real bloody fight after that. Three months later, a week before Dre died, Dre and D made up. Everyone was happy again.
