Flurries. They are small pixie-like creatures... Flurries are the size of a crumb. They will live anywhere that it will snow. You see, their life is dependent on snowflakes and their wings. They are very isolated creatures. They usually have about two friends and a soul mate. That's it! Crazy right?
Flurries live in groups called clusters. There are around 100 Flurries in a cluster. These creatures live in icicles. The maximum number allowed to live in an icicle is 5. No flurry is permitted to leave their cluster because it means certain death. It isn't safe. They are too weak to survive on their own.
There was one Flurry that was strong enough. Her name was Glimmer. Her story didn't start out great, but it ended okay.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
I woke up when a cool gust of air made it's way through the window and into my bedroom. It send comforting chills up my spine. Since I'm a Flurry, the cold is always there keeping me company. It's my best friend because I have yet to make my only friends and my soul mate. When you meet them for the first time you know that it's them. There is this tingle you feel when you are near them. Most Flurries are 10 when they meet their best friends and 15 when you meet their soul mate. I'm sixteen! Everyone tells me that I'm just a late bloomer, but my gut tells me that they are wrong. Something is different about me.
Ever since I was little I've had these strange powers that most Flurries don't have. I haven't told anyone because I'm afraid of what the Flurry Council will do to me.
Most Flurries have the power to make ice come out of thin air, design snowflakes, and create gusts of wind. I can turn invisible, make indestructible ice swords (you don't even want to see the damage I did to my house to discover that it was indestructible), and I can make gray clouds appear that rain hail. I have all of those powers in addition to the ones that everyone else has. It's really peculiar... Nobody has extra powers. Not even the Flurry Council members.
One time I went to the library to try and research why I had extra powers, but no luck. They had nothing. I even asked my teachers if it was possible for a Flurry to have extra powers. They said that that hasn't happened to a Flurry in this cluster for hundreds of years. When I asked what happened to that Flurry, they just said, "One day, he just disappeared from the cluster. It was as if he had never been there in the first place."
After that, I had decided to stop prying for answers. I didn't want to disappear like that poor boy did. So instead of focusing on that, I focused on my studies so I could become a great Flurry and be able to control my powers better.
All of that happened a year ago. All of that fear had gone away, but it came rushing back the minute that I knew what today was. Today is the Sorting Ceremony.
On the day of the Sorting Ceremony all of the 16 year olds from the cluster (there are 7 of us by the way) have to use our powers in front of the judges so they can assign us our jobs that we will have for the rest of our lives. If you can't tell, it's a BIG DEAL!
The options for your job are a house constructor or an interior designer for the highest ranking Flurries. An artist for the average Flurry. A lawn care specialist, for those who aren't very good at using their powers. And food collector for those who screw up their audition.
I would love to be an interior designer, so I really hope I get the job!
I've heard gossip from some of the older Flurries about what happens during the ceremony. They said that you go into this big room and they have some of the most powerful Flurries battle you. You have to use your powers to defend yourself. While you are battling your opponent the judges sit on the sideline and observe how well you do at using your powers in a tense situation.
