April

Jamie laid awake in bed with the covers off. He stared straight up at the dark ceiling, immobilized. He didn't move except for a twitching finger and an occasional blink. He heard strange noises that sounded like groaning and sighing and he could see shadows moving in the corner of his eye. The figures were grinning with mouths wide full of pointy teeth and staring at him with dead, hollow eyes. He swore he felt their black bony fingers tugging at his shirt and bedsheets and even the sting of their long nails cutting into his skin. He didn't know if they were illusions created by his paranoia or personified depictions of his past trying to keep him from forgetting.

He suddenly felt the wet, rough strokes of a warm tongue against his cheek and he gasped as he broke free from his coma-state. He slowly turned his head to see Hunter, staring at him with his big red and yellow eyes, which had grown dull and heavy. The young Poochyena's health had grown weaker with each passing day spent indoors. When he looked at Hunter, he realized he was being affected the same way.

The rim of Jamie's eyes began to well and he lifted his hand, stroking Hunter gently. They watched each other for a few moments before Jamie sat up and got off the bed. He walked to his desk and turned on the lamp. Sitting down, he took out a paper and a pencil and wrote:

Dear mom and Jacque

The world is not what it seems. There are things that we don't know. Things that they dont want us to know. Our lives isn't like what shows on the screen. We live in real life. And real life is hell.

I know this because I saw it myself. I saw the things they wanted nobody to see. Thats why they are looking for me. I came here to hide from them. To hide from everything. But no where I go is safe.

I'm sorry to leave you like this. None of this has anything to do with you. Me and Hunter won't survive trapped here anyway. I am going to finish what I started. And we are not coming back.

Jacque. Please don't make the same mistakes I made. Whatever you do keep doing what society says. Forget I was ever here.

I love you. Goodbye.

Jamie

Right after writing his name, Jamie froze. Staring at the letter he had written, he crumpled it up and threw it on the ground.

By the time dawn broke, Jamie had already packed and left, returning to what anyone would depict as a remarkable world of mysterious creatures and adventure, Jamie felt as though he were stepping back into a never-ending nightmare.
