I look through the window at the trees passing by with the light slipping through their orange and yellow leaves. I sigh and look back to the Walkman my dad let me borrow for the trip. A song just ended and I reach for a new tape. I pause to read the name, deciding whether it's one to skip or one of the few songs in my mental playlist that I usually play with the current mood I'm in.  Sherry baby  from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I hover my thumb above the play button.

"Come on, cheer up sweetie. You should be happy we're visiting your aunt!" My mother says.

"Last time I saw her she made me try on one of those sweaters that cause your body to break out into hives. She's so weird," I said, disgust spilling into my voice.

"Elle, don't say that about her! She is quite an intelligent and independent woman! She just... has a very odd taste in style."

I snort and put my electric pink headphones back on as I hit the play button:

"Sherry, Sherry baby," Frankie starts singing.

"Sherry, Sherry baby," I close my eyes and listen to the music.

"Sherry baby," I think about my cat Philito waiting at home for me to come back to him, accusing me of the betrayal I was forced to commit by leaving him alone in a dark a desolate house.

"Sherry, can you come out tonight?" I listen and stare at the trees with their intricately patterned leaves.

"Come come, come out tonight," the real fun starts.

"Sherry, Sherry baby," I hear my parents shout.

"Sherry, can you come out tonight?" I look away from my iPod and focus my gaze on the wrong way driver heading right towards us.

"Why don't you come out," my eyes open wide as my parents try to swerve out of the way.

"Come out to twist my party," it's too late, and the car is 10 feet away.

"Where the bright lights shine," it hits us and I see the forceful impact crushing my mom.

"We'll dance the night away," the windshield spraying glass onto my dad.

"I'm gonna make you mine," the headrest of his seat coming back to hit me in the face, slicing my forehead and I duck, but it continues to fly behind me and I suddenly whip back against the seat as the car's forward motion is interrupted and it flips over. I feel a sharp pain in my lower back. I scream silently.

"Sherry baby.

The music continues playing as my eyes start to blur, the motion around me mixing with the colors of the bright setting. The last thing I see is the glass on the road, glistening like deadly crystals before my eyes close shut.
