Giving up the crystal was nearly impossible. Hero felt almost unstoppable with the endless amount of ice at her disposable. She felt that if there was anyone who deserved to keep the artifact, it was her. Giving it away to a group of researchers did not sound appealing, especially since she knew it would only be sitting around once they were done researching it. Natsu had to sneak into Hero’s house to take the crystal and get the reward for it.
Lucy was excited to get the money to pay for her rent as a present, however Hero was the opposite. She had turned her apartment upside down looking for the crystal before going to the guild to confront Natsu. It was not until Mirajane confronted her about her behavior that she was able to calm down and realize that the crystal had made her power hungry.
Makarov was glad to see that the problem was solved before it had truly begun. Thinking about the artifact crystal reminded him of the hilts that he had given to Hero, and that brought him to wonder where those had gone. Not once had he seen her carrying the hilts, and she never asked for assistance from Erza to train her like he had expected. “Hero!” Makarov called out, “Come here for a moment.” He waved her over. Hero looked at Mirajane with a confused expression before she walked over to the master.
“Yes?” She cowered slightly, hoping that she was not going to get a scolding for letting the crystal brainwash her.
“Where are those dual blades that I gave you?”
The nervousness on her face must have said a thousand words, because Makarov saw right through her. It did not matter whatever excuse she would give, he would know she was lying. He started tapping his pointed boot against the counter he was standing on, arms crossed with impatience. Hero sighed and decided to just come out with the truth.
After explaining that someone stole them, Makarov wiggled his mustache and grumbled to himself for a few moments. “I knew this would happen…” He muttered. Hero raised an eyebrow, wondering what he meant. “Follow me.” He said and walked off and out of the main hall. Hero did as she was told.
Makarov lead Hero off into a more private room, and once he believed that no one could hear them, Makarov turned to face Hero. “You got your memories back, correct? How much can you remember about your father?” He asked, a stern look growing more and more serious.
Blue eyes narrowed slightly, “Enough to know that he is an irresponsible ass.” She said bluntly, swearing openly because she had grown very bitter towards the man that left her and her mother alone to fend off men that were looking for him. Makarov closed his eyes, tilting his head forward slightly. “He is, definitely. However there is something that he has learned to take responsibility for.”
“Like what? Those hilts?” Hero scoffed.
Makarov shook his head, “No, you.” After simply saying that, Makarov reached behind him to pick up a book. Inside the book was a piece of paper, and the master handed Hero that paper. Hero opened up the yellowed sheet of paper, skimming the words.
‘Dear Hero,
I know I have not been a good father. I’ve never been prepared to have a child, and to be honest I never wanted one. That is, until I saw you in your mother’s arms. I do not know what it was, but there was something about that picture that made me feel complete. The responsibilities of being a father never clicked however, and there was too much going on for me to truly take care of you. All I could do was protect you from a distance.
Your mother’s death… It was my fault, I cannot deny that. I got too comfortable. They found out about you two and tried to use you to get to me. There is nothing I can say to make what happened okay, but I just want you to know that I never abandoned you. When your mother died and you were all alone, I found you and brought you to Glashon. I begged her to take you in, to teach you to take care of yourself. I needed to take care of things, and during that time I would not be able to watch over you.
