I'm dying. This is it. I will never live to see another day in this rubbish cell. Blood trickled down like a tear from my mouth as it mixed with the sweat and bruises on my body. All I could think at this point in time is that my life is over. Yet, the painful memories of what led me here engulfed my mind to the point where I couldn't shake them away.
I remembered my beautiful home back in Boston.
I remembered my mother and her warm smile
I remembered my father and his addicting laugh
I remembered my older brother Jason. He was a goofball.
I remembered my best friend, Jessica.
This was my past. The past I was forced to leave behind for a painful future, and as each day passes I can never forgive myself for not listening to my best friend. It would've prevented leaving the ones I love for this world of hurt.
Flashback
The wind blew against my face as I ran to the house at just a short distance away. Snow was piled up against the sides of the driveway as a shovel leaned against the shutter. I pulled my jacket closer to my body and ran as fast as I could with my best friend tagging behind me.
"Jess, I'm freezing my butt out here! Move faster!" I shouted at her as the wind picked up.
She didn't answer and ran to catch up with me. We both got to the door and thrust it open. The warm air welcomed us like a hug as we slammed the door in the face of the cold wind and snow.
"What a relief." said Jess as she took off her hat and bulky winter coat, "I almost thought we'd be frozen to the spot!"
I snorted "I thought so too but thankfully we got out of there. I think I'm getting the feeling back in my fingers."
We laughed and started putting away our things as the warmth of my house made our shivers go away. I always loved spending time with Jess and I was glad to have more time to hang out with her, now that winter break started. Especially, considering our current arrangements. Jessica was staying with me and my family for about a week because her parents were on a business trip. I don't know what got our parents to trust two thirteen year old girls under one roof but Jess didn't complain. Quite the contrary, when I told her the news she was ecstatic and started squealing. I squealed along with her and we did a ridiculous little happy dance in her room.
Today officially marked the first day being "roomies." And what better way to start off winter break than having the house to yourself? My parents, at the moment, were still at work and my brother went to a seventeen day winter camp. Jess and I had the freedom and liberty to do whatever we pleased. Granted, we reassured my parents that we wouldn't trash the house while they were gone and promised that we'd call if there was any trouble. But I doubt there'd be any trouble and how much could we really do to wreck the house?
Well actually, we could probably do a lot but we'll refrain ourselves.
Thinking that, I stretched out my arms and followed Jessica into the hall. We switched on the TV and made cookies while watching reruns of Tom and Jerry. No one outgrows that show.
"How much are you willing to bet that Tom's gonna win this time?" Jess asked me as we brought out our cookies.
I smirked "Oh c'mon! Tom never wins. Ever!" she knew that as well as I do.
But Jess was in denial "That's not true! Tom's a winner and I for one, think Jerry's going down."
I shook my head "Jerry's the champ. He's never going down and if Tom wins, I'll give you half my cookies."
