Intro-
This is the tragically beautiful story of Layla Trent. She can be sneaky, and lie, and steal, and go wandering off at times. She blends in and stands out all at once. She is guarded yet loving. She is incredibly bright and cunning. She reads her books in the protection of the trees. She is lonely and brave and fragile and beautiful. She was extraordinary, but no one knew it.
Layla, who was born into the Factionless of the city, has learned to always take care of her people and be carful of the Faction members. For years she has been looked down upon, sneered and laughed at, or occasionally fed by the Abnegation. She had a soft spot for them. But when she was ten years old, her life changes forever when her parents die in the hands of former Dauntless.
Now, at fifteen, Layla dreams of a life outside of the alleys. In her books, stolen from the Erudite, she discovers a different world. One where she will be respected and not laughed at. One where you do not need to fight for survival. She wishes into a hopeless void that she could be like them, to choose her own path at life next year and escape her hopeless world. She wants to live in the Factions.
She soon mets Toby: a Factionless boy from the Amity sector who joins her on all her adventures. As they grow closer, and her sixteenth birthday looms, she encounters Nora. A Dauntless born girl. Mysterious and loud and well spoken. Though curious of Nora and her story, Layla pushes away, remembering what the Dauntless did to her parents so long ago.
As the days go by, and with the help of her new friends, Layla discovers more about herself, the Factions, the world around her, and if she can ever accept her tragically beautiful life.
