prologue.
Bonnie was shaking. Sitting in the tiny closet that was in the hallway, she felt her body grow stiff. The loud clashes could be heard from downstairs, the mutters of Harry's constant words. Bonnie had a gut feeling this night was not going to end well.
"God dammit!" He screamed. Bonnie flinched when she heard his fist slam into the wall. Pulling at the sleeves of her over-sized flannel that originally belonged to Harry, Bonnie brought her knees up to her chest, hugging her small frame.
Bonnie could not help but grow frightened when she heard Harry scurrying up the stairs. She felt a tear roll down her cheek and she quickly wiped it away.
"Bonnie, where the hell are you?" Harry yelled. She heard him open and slam doors. "Bonnie!" He screamed again, sounding angry. Squeezing her eyes shut tight, she tried controlling her breathing. The house was silent, and she was not taking that for granted because she knew what was coming up.
Hearing his foot steps grow closer, she began to shake even more than she should. She heard his hand rest on the knob and watched as the golden knob turned, everything suddenly felt like slow motion. The door eventually swung open and Harry's eyes fell onto Bonnie who was curled up into a ball, moving closer and closer into the corner. Bonnie met his eyes which grew soft.
"Bonnie.." He whispered and knelt down beside her, resting his hand on his knee. "Bonnie, please." He croaked. Bonnie shook her head, refusing to let him finish.
"Harry." She cried. "I-I'm so scared." She whispered through her sobs. Harry immediately pulled the tiny girl towards his muscular body and held her tighter than he ever had before. She wrapped her arms around his waist and nuzzled her head into his neck as he rested the side of his head against her forehead, lightly kissing her nose.
"I am too, Bonnie." He started, "but we have to fight through this."
"They want you dead." She pulled into Harry's white shirt in pure agony at the thought of loosing this boy. He kissed her forehead.
"They won't kill me. I will protect you and myself, you just have to trust me." She nodded. "I love you." He whispered, now looking into her eyes.
There was something about looking into Bonnie's eyes that calmed him. Her dark blue eyes were something you could look at all day. They were absolutely perfect.
Suddenly, there was a noise blaring throughout the neighborhood and Bonnie looked into Harry's eyes in panic. Picking her up, Harry carried Bonnie into their shared room, slamming it shut and locking the door. He set her down on the bed and ran towards the closet pulling out a suitcase. Bonnie could barely see what was going on. Her tears where blurring her vision. She couldn't hear the reassuring shouts of Harry over the loud, ear bursting sirens.
Bonnie hugged her knees again, begging herself to be strong - for Harry's sake but she just couldn't.
"H-Harry.." Harry didn't hear her cries. Harry ran over to Bonnie's dresser, throwing random stuff into it, making sure he had everything she needed. He even included a couple of his clothes and some hair bands and a brush for her teeth and hair. And other girl materials.
"Open the door!" A low voice screamed through a megaphone. The lights were off in the room, the only light was the moon shinning through the window and the open back patio. Bonnie turned towards Harry who was looking out the window. "Shit." He cursed. He looked back at Bonnie and brought her into his arms.
"You need to promise me you will keep yourself safe." She looked at him, but grabbed onto him tight knowing it might just be the last time she felt his touch. She nodded.
"You too." She cried into his neck. Harry lifted her chin and placed a soft kiss onto her lips.
"Don't go back to your family, go to Emily's or Scott's. They know everything."
"I love you so much." She cried. He smiled slightly - for her sake. "I love you too, Bonnie." Lightly kissing the too of her head, Harry guided her down the stairs, and she quieted herself, making sure her sobs weren't too loud. But when the moonlight reflected on Harry's face through the windows downstairs, she saw the tears streaming down his face and his lip quivering. He had fear and hope wrapped up in one in those green eyes of his. When they stopped at the back door, Bonnie kissed him.
"I trust you." She whispered. He somehow heard her over the sirens.
Harry looked down but jumped when he heard a foot hit door in an attempt to knock it down.
"You know how to get out of here from the back right? You go straight in the woods -" she shushed him with one last kiss.
"I know." She mumbled into his lips, their tears soaking one another's shirts. Harry pulled her in for a tight hug one last time, before pulling away when the door came down with a loud clash. They both turned their heads in the direction where they saw people running into the house.
Harry pushed Bonnie out the transparent door, yelling at her to run, and he then slammed the back door shut, locking her out. Slowly, Bonnie started backing away, but stopped when Harry turned around, sinking to the floor. She watched as he ran his fingers through his hair constantly and tugged at it.
Bonnie watched as a black figure came up to Harry, lifting him off the ground and shoving him against the glass, his eyes met hers once again.
Through the glass, she heard the cop who held Harry up against the glass scream "there's someone out there, get her!" He yelled. Harry screamed. "Bonnie fucking go!" He scried out, trying to escape the grasp of the cop. "Go!" He screamed again. When the cops shoved Harry aside and started opening the door, Bonnie started running. She ran into the woods, making sure her suitcase was behind her. She ran until her legs couldn't take it anymore and she rested against a tree, panting, begging for air. Her hand clawed onto the bark and her other hand took out the bun in her air and let her air that has leaves and dirt in it hang loose. She cried.
"I think she went this way." She heard the voice of the cops, their flashlights shining. Bonnie grew panicked, not knowing which way to go between the three choices as she stood in the middle. Everything seemed to have vanished from her mind, but she thought back to Harry and their times walking through the woods to get to the meadows which eventually lead into the city. It was their little secret.
Bonnie zoomed straight foreword, ignoring the twigs that scraped her legs. She just ran. And when Bonnie reached the meadows, she stopped. Just like it felt as if her heart was. The world was spinning around her as she stood in the very middle where Harry stood when she realized she was in love with that boy. It was their first kiss, their first hand hold, their first deep conversation. Everything was held here. It was peaceful. The sirens were only muffled now, the crickets where even louder than the sirens. Bonnie took in a deep breath, then exhaled, taking in her surroundings, before running again.
When Bonnie reached the city, she ran down the empty streets. In was two am, the streets where completely empty besides the club music pumping through the air, but Bonnie ignored it, making her way to her best friend, Emily's, house. And when she arrived, everything clicked.
Bonnie Gray's life will never be the same again.
