O. FAIR VERONA
OCTOBER 1983. HAWKINS, INDIANA.
❛❛ADOLECESCE IS HARD ENOUGH, LET'S NOT ADD THE SUPERNATURAL TO THE MIX.❜❜
Amara Berlin always felt the overwhelming pressures of middle school. Not like her older sister Carmen, who got the cooler name, and easier life. Wherever Amara went, if Carmen went first then people would like her and if Amara went first then people who were shocked to meet her sister. She had spent all of the elementary school going to a boarding school in New England until their mother tells them that they will be heading to Hawkins, Indiana for work-related reasons. Hawkins was everything Amara expected from a shitty town.
Besides the other new girl, who she befriended over the shared interest of skateboarding, all the creepy zombie kid stories from when Will Byers went missing, and the intense hatred from Mike Wheeler. The only thing Amara had to look forward too was her cousin, Ryan Berlin, Carmen's least favorite person due to his New York city English accent, his family was the overtly Jewish part that Mr. Berlin, their father failed to pass on to them. Ryan's parents had gone off to Doctors without Borders in a less fortunate spot in the world, leaving him behind to figure Hawkins with them. Amara never expected a greater evil from another dimension to be her biggest issue aside from buying feminine products.
Carmen Berlin, however, had completely expected Hawkins to be the shittiest place on the planet. She had just won over all her peers to elect her in anticipation for her fourth consecutive year as class president when her mother for no reason, pulled her out claiming that they needed the fresh start to get away from the very place they lost their father. Of course, her mother would try and use this as an use for pulling her out of school to stop her from becoming the Afro-Latina/Jewish Barbara Walters, even though she has told her mother several times that becoming a talk show host is the sole thing she wants to focus on following her father's untimely passing (not death, untimely passing).
So, after saying goodbye to all her friends, Carmen asked her hairstylist for Lynda Carter hair (from her Wonder Woman days) and set off to rebuild her election campaign. And even though there were like 50 students at Hawkins, winning over a Daphne Blake brunette, what boy that she assumed was a fragment of Stephen King or Stanley Kubrick's mind, and a gelled-up loser are the only tolerable people, Carmen has to throw her election scrapbook in the garbage and help them defeat evil for the greater good (and surprisingly get along with her sister and even more surprisingly, her stupid cousin). She might surprise herself even more and find the previously referred to the gelled up loser, Hawkins' very own, Steve Harrington to be actually quite charming.
AN: the face claim I'm using for Amara is the same as my it fanfic cause it's hard finding black models so young but she is 15 so I decided to use her and Carmen is 23 which makes it weird to write them as like a few years difference but oh well. I'm really excited for this but I won't be writing until midterms are officially over!
