"The caves! We can set my raft upon the stream and float away!"
"You're right! Let's go tonight. There's no point waiting for my wedding dress to be fitted, waste of cloth."
Outside Kibo gasped, hands over her mouth. Amai crept out of the cave on tiptoed feet. Nevertheless, Kibo still accosted her outside. "Amai!" she cried. Amai jumped. "Kibo! Why are you here?"
"Never mind that" she said. "What's important is why you're here!"
Amai squirmed. Kibo continued "I would have run away long ago!"
If Amai had been shocked when Kibo jumped out at her, it was nothing compared to now. "What?!" she said. "You're Otosan's perfect little girl! You'd never!"
Kibo's reply was sharper than she intended. "Of course I would have! I hate it here! The only reason I haven't left is that I have no one to leave with! You are not missing out on this opportunity! You're going to leave here and you're going to have a life!"
Fifteen minutes later Amai was struggling with a pack that carried all her worldly possessions and a lot of dumplings. So was Kenmeina, except he was also struggling with a big raft.
Kibo hugged her sister for what she knew was the last time.
"I'll always love you." Amai whispered
"Me too."
Kibo waved and waved in the lantern light, waved until the raft was just a speck in the distance. Then, wearily, as though all the purpose had gone out of her, she trudged back home.
