The Fallen Twins Laughing Game

Chapter 1

THWACK! "Ouch!" Scarlett cried out as her face kissed the floor. "Ha ha get up idiot!" giggled Shelby as she pointed at her sister. "It's not my fault the steps covered with ice that MOM," she shouted, gesturing to the open window of a white modern day house, "couldn't be bothered to clear!" replied Scarlett as she picked herself up off the frosted ground. She sighed with a cold breath, creating a smoke effect which merged in with the winter's air. "You know what I hate about the start of winter?" Asked Scarlett as her and Shelby started down the long, patchy road to school. "Yeah, because it's so cold, James Adams might lock himself up and you won't be able to see him for a while," joked Shelby, who was already giggling before she made the remark. Scarlett laughed and playfully punched Shelby in the arm. "No! I hate how it's really cold and yet it hasn't even snowed yet!" Scarlett ran her fingers along the wall of someone's front garden, scraping off a thin layer of frost. Shelby contemplated, "Well...maybe it will snow tomorrow! Now that would be awesome!" Despite it being possible, Scarlett quickened her pace and snapped, "Oh come on. What are the odds it will snow on our birthday? None, that's what!" Shelby sighed at her sister's acrimony, and started to question herself. Was she too expectant that it would snow? Or was her sister too nefarious? Either way, they made it to school before the bell went.

Being the shortest two people in the year, they were normally out casts and spent their days together on what everyone else calls, 'The Loser Bench.' Scarlett and Shelby weren't particularly popular, and this was a good enough reason for a group of bullies to pick on them. The leader of the bullies was Julie. Through the perfect skin, and chestnut brown hair, her mind was a torture place for 'losers', or in this case, Scarlett and Shelby. "Aww the sisters are eating together again! Shelby, don't you get sick looking at that face every day?" Julie asked, pointing at Scarlett. Shelby was the quieter sister, so before she could even look up, Julie answered her own question with, "Oh wait...you both have the same face! I'd hate to be you guys! Imagine that girls," She glanced back at her friends, "waking up every day to see a repugnant face next to you, then realizing you look like that too?!" The girls all exclaimed their disgust. Shelby whispered, "We may be twins but we don't look exactly alike." Julie continued to laugh. Scarlett ran her tongue around her mouth, eliminating every last bit of food, before looking into Julies face, smiling and stating, "I noticed that when you shake your head, it sounds like a pin inside a T.V. box. Don't you ever wish that you actually had a brain?" With that insult, Scarlett and Shelby stood up and walked away, leaving behind a perplexed and furious Julie.

At the end of school, Scarlett checked her locker. She shoved a few of her books in there, except for her biology book, which kept popping out. "Oh come on you stupid book!" She shouted as she used all her might to shove the book back in, but to no avail the book kept popping out. "Ok then, let's see the problem." She took the book out and behind it was a crumpled up note, hiding at the back of her locker. Filled with curiosity, she opened the note, and read it quietly;

"To Scarlett

I'm sorry this had to come to you in note form, but I was too scared to say it in person...until now.

Please meet me at the Oak tree in The Coolock forest after school.

Love, James Adams."

She sighed and hugged the note. "He put 'love'! Oh...after school...that's now! Shelby come on!" She shouted into the bathroom. "I'm coming, I'm coming!" replied Shelby. After practically running to the forest, Scarlett and Shelby were soon surrounded by tall trees arching over them. The gnarled and twisted trees groaned and an icy wind tugged and ripped the last of autumns golden leaves. The air is heavy and dank with the stagnant odour of decomposing leaves. Stumbling through sharp brambles and vicious thorns, they find themselves at The Oak tree; however, there is no sight of James. "Are you sure he told you to meet him here?" Shelby questioned. "Of course! Read the note yourself if you don't believe me!" Scarlett snapped as she threw the still creased note at Shelby, who caught it by luck and skimmed over the fancy writing. "You know who's writing this looks like..." Shelby trailed off as laughing was heard from behind the oak tree. Out emerged Julie and her friends trailing behind her. She holds her stomach, guffawing, and occasionally snorting when she took in breaths. "This is priceless! Are you getting this?" Julie called to a girl beside her, who was filming the entire prank on her iPhone. "So this was all a setup, just so you could do this prank?!" Scarlett stormed even though her voice was breaking. "No of course not!" sneered Julie as she took steps closer to them. "The pranks not over yet..." she revealed. All the girls surrounded them. "This, my friends, is called the Laughing Game. Here's how it goes..." Suddenly, with an almighty push, she literally threw Scarlett and Shelby into a deep, cleverly hidden ditch behind them. Spine tingling shrieks were heard, before an almighty thud, with even a slight crack which wasn't too noticeable. "YOU get pushed into a ditch, and we all laugh!" Julie taunted as she ran off laughing with her friends, unknowing what lay at the bottom of the ditch. At the bottom of a deep, dark ditch, laid Scarlett and Shelby's lifeless bodies. Their numb toes, leading up to curled legs, accompanied with tangled spines, braided arms and contorted necks. The only parts of their bodies that were intact, was their hands and fingers, which had intertwined with each other, keeping them linked, even in death. That night, when the full moon was shining, it started to snow.
