An hour or two passed before Mrs. Lamen looked at the clock and realized it was far past our curfew and that she should send us off. She waved us back to her office to write us passes in case anyone caught us out at night. The moment she turned her back, I seized Peter's wrist and threw it off my shoulder before pulling a Forest Gump. I'd rather risk punishment than spend another moment of those two trying to put the "fun" back in "my funeral."
After I felt that there was enough distance between me and the choir room, I walked slowly towards the girls' building, feeling as if all of my energy had been sucked out. My eyes stayed their hollow white, my face a color to challenge it. The numbness of the day was still residing in my chest as I switched my bag to the other shoulder. Védő was mumbling an angry string of words in another language that I don't think were very polite. Finally, he broke into English to lecture me.
"You cannot do that duet. I forbid it."
My eyes turned orange and I raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me ,you don't have the athority to 'forbid' me from anything."
"I'm your gyám!" He maturely whined. "I've been tasked with protecting you."
"Oh, what danger does singing hold? Losing my voice? Oh, HEAVEN FORBID!!!" I said sarcastically.
He mumbled a bunch.
My face screwed up into a grimace. "It's not like I have much of a choice, anyway. Weren't you listening at all?"
"Yeah, I was. Why don't you sing more? Your voice is pretty good."
"Védő, that is not what I meant, and it is not the time."
"Yeah, yeah, I know. But why don't you ever do random duets with me?"
"Should I step out and let you be alone with your jealousy, or can we move on?"
Mumbling. Then, he grumbled "Fine. I guess there are more pressing matters."
I smiled, eyes turning emerald green. "Thank you. I knew that you would come to your senses eventually. There are definitely more important things to talk about."
"Yeah." I heard the smirk in his voice. "Like your dancing skills."
My eyes turned lime green for a moment, then back to their previous orange. "Védő!" I scowled as he laughed in my ear.
"What-what can I say? You're-"
"You're a great dancer and singer, Belle!" Peter's voice rung happily somewhere behind me. I yelped and tried to turn towards him, but tripped on my own feet and fell back. Peter appeared and tried to catch me. If he had succeeded, , it would have probably looked pretty romantic. he had one arm wrapped over me to hold my back and another under my head. However, he failed to catch me. I just brought him down on top of me. He fell across my stomach, knocking the wind out of me. At the same time, my head hit the concrete, hard.
The world suddenly got really fuzzy, the back of my head throbbing. My train of thought was knocked off coarse as my consciousness threatened to leave. None of my thoughts were finished, nothing made sense. I heard a plastic thunk, heard Peter chuckle and mumble something that sounded like an apology.
His weight left my stomach. I opened my eyes, which were changing color quickly, then immediately squinted them, the evening light blinding. I made out Peter's face, barely. He had his usual playful smirk. His mouth moved, but the sound that came to my ears was warbled, almost unidentifiable. I closed my eyes, the pain in the back of my head becoming overwhelming. Two voices rung in my ears as my consciousness followed through on its threat. Right before I passed out, I realized what they were saying. Belle.
