Chapter 3
I woke up and both Kevin and Sam are still by my side. I smile and snuggle into Kevin's side. I feel Sam stir and i turn around to see him slowly opening his eyes.
"H-Hi Sam..." I say smiling. he smiles back at me and pulls me into his arms.
"Good Morning Chad." He says to me and then i feel Kevin waking up as well. He sits up and looks over at us.
"Morning." He says in a drowsy voice. I giggle, and he smiles. I sit up and look at both of them.
"Are we gonna buy my stuff now?" i ask in a silly voice. They both nod at me and i get off the bed. "Really?" and they nod again, both smiling. Kevin walks into a closet getting out clothes for both him and Sam. They tell me that they bought me a tooth brush and to go into the bathroom to brush my teeth.
i go and do as they tell me, reaching above the sink to get the brush. It's been a long time since i used a tooth brush, since Matilda used my only one to whip me and it broke in half. I keep brushing while humming the alphabet, Clarissa taught me that doing that is the right way to brush my teeth. I finish and go back to their bedroom. Both Kevin and Sam are dressed and they pick me up taking me outside.
"We are gonna go get you some food first, Okay Chad?" Sam tells me. i nod as he buckles me into the car seat in the back of their car. Kevin gets behind the wheel and Sam is on the opposite side of him. They connect their hands on the center console and the car starts to move. I stare at the world as it flies by. There is so much I've never seen before! There are other cars zipping by, and people walking.
I like riding in the car, it feels like I'm flying. I don't like when it suddenly stops, and i move forward. I feel uneasy when this happens, I feel like if I wasn't in this seat i would actually go flying.
The car stops in front of a big building with lots of windows and music playing loud enough to be heard inside the car. It has a big sign with what looks like an apple drawn by one of the other kids from the orphanage. I see a word under it. It looks like someone mushed the word Apple and Bees together.
Kevin gets out of the car and comes to open the door for Sam, then mine and he unbuckles me. I jump out and latch onto Sam's hand. The music is a lot louder now. They lead me inside and a woman smiles at us kindly. She says something but I couldn't really hear what it was. Then she walks off and we follow. We end up at a table, and she hands Sam and Kevin a book, and me a coloring page. I smile at her.
"Chad, this is a restaurant. We eat here." Kevin tells me. I nod. "You can figure out what you want and then color." I nod once more. I look down at the page, there are words and pictures of food. I see a lot of things I have never even heard of, let alone eaten. The girl comes back and asks for our drinks. I quickly look through the menu.
"Sam? What is a Shirley Temple?" I ask quietly.
"Have you had Sprite before?" He replies, I nod. "Its like that but with a lot of Cherry Syrup in it." I smile widely. Cherry. I thought that was something Clarissa made up. I look at the girl.
"I want one please." She nods, writes something down on a notepad, and then leaves again.
I look back at the food, thinking she will probably want to know what food we want next. I see one thing I recognize. Hamburger. I circle it with a crayon I was given, and flip the page over and start to color in the people on it. I wonder why she gave me different shades of the same color. I use the lightest grey to color the ocean, the next lightest to color the girl's hair, and then the darkest for her skin. I admire my drawing.
"Chad, why did you make her skin blue?" Kevin asks me. I Stare at him. What the heck is a blue?
"She's... An Alien!" I tell him. I think he's crazy, of course. I colored her skin dark grey, like his.
"Oh! That explains her Green hair and the yellow ocean!" I look at him. The ocean is just the lightest grey. I don't even know what green or yellow are.
The lady comes backs to take our orders, I show my circled hamburger to Sam, and he tells her that I would like one. I stare up at her. She has very light hair, and slightly darker skin. Her eyes are very dark, and she has darker marks all over her face. She's very pretty, but not as pretty as Clarissa.
It takes a long time for our food to come. I color all over the page, doing puzzles or other things. I eventually run out. I sit there sadly. I miss her.
I think Kevin notices my being sad, so he asks me whats wrong.
"I just... miss someone from... the orphanage..." I tell him sadly. They look at each other, then back at me. A silence feels like it is swallowing us whole.
"Here you go! One T-Bone steak," She says handing a pate to Sam,"one kid's hamburger," she hands me a plate, "and then one macaroni cheese salad." She hands him his plate.
"T-thank you..." I tell her shyly. She nods and walks away.
I pick up my fork and try to cut up the bread and burger. I give up on using it and pick it up with my hands, taking a small bite out of it. I have a feeling this is going to be a good day.
