Eren and Kaneki traveled for weeks on end, only to rest in the remains of people's homes and fight for their lives against starving Titans. Eren's Titan remains became the only food sources for the both of them, no matter how terrible it tasted to the both of them. They were growing tired and hungry, but Eren made a promise to his friend long ago that he would take him to live in a peaceful civilization, and his passion to keep that promise kept him going. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for Kaneki to grow ill from the constant Titan flesh and the never ending starvation cycles that created a mentally instability that grew too much for him to handle. After the ferocious starvation attacks ended, Kaneki had finally grown too weak to walk and his ghoul eye would never fade away. Eren carried him on his back for the weeks following. They were starting to lose faith as months started to pass and they found nothing but dead cities and towns, empty fields of overgrown vegetation, and deserts that stretched beyond their line of sight.

"Eren..." Kaneki whispered with his raspy voice to him during the night.

"You're gonna be ok, Kaneki. We're gonna find civilization, and we're gonna find help. Like a doctor or something, but you're going to be ok. I promise," Eren replied as tears streamed down his already tear-stained cheeks. The pain from walking for so long combined with the constant Titan-shifting was agonizing to Eren, but what hurt more to him was the fact his best and only friend could die on the trip they both so desperately wanted to make.

"Eren, please... d-don't do this to y-yourself," Kaneki whispered back.

"I have to. You have to be safe. I promised you," Eren replied as he tried to quicken his pace. The winds that had been blowing had begun to start howling through. Eren ducked through the wind as he pushed through it's strength.

"Eren..." Kaneki whispered in a shivering tone.

"Kaneki, please save your strength," Eren replied as he clenched his eyes further closed.

"No Eren, l-look," Kaneki shivered as he raised his shaking finger upward. Eren gasped when he looked up at the direction Kaneki was pointing. A large wall taller than the tallest Titans Eren had ever seen was standing there, untouched, empty, and at the very top, two people with machinery attached to their sides were standing post.

"Hey! Down here! Help!" Eren shouted in excitement as he jumped slightly. Eren turned to Kaneki and put him down on the ground. "Hold on buddy."

"O-Ok," Kaneki replied as he curled up into a ball. Eren continued to shout and jump for as long and as loud as he could to catch their attention, but his sleeplessness prevented him from continuing on endlessly. Fortunately, his cries were heard by the guards and they came jumping down to help the two of them. As Eren watched them, he turned to Kaneki to tell him, but fainted before he could continue walking to him.

"I can't believe this. There couldn't be people outside the walls. It's just... unbelievable," one of the guards said to the other.

"We shouldn't be asking that question as much as we should be asking how they with stood the terrible weather we've been having the past few weeks," one of the nurses replied as she put a damp cloth against Eren's forehead. Eren jumped at the touch and attacked the nurse; wrapping his right leg around her throat and shoving her head downward with his left as he pulled the arm that held the cloth behind her.

"Woah, little fellow! That's not necessary, ok?" The guard said as he held his hands up in a surrendering form. "We are just trying to help."

"Help?" Eren repeated the word as he loosened his hold on the nurse.

"I'm going to go inform them that he's awake," one of the guards said to the other as he left. The other nodded to him and turned back to Eren.

"Yes, help," the guard said as he reached for his coat. Eren tightened his hold on the nurse in reaction, until the guard slowly pulled out a patch from his coat.
