people rushing by
shoulders, elbows,
like swimming upstream
spaces so small you feel
as though
you are being
suffocated.
the paper is due
only five minutes until class
it's still not done
pen scratches on paper
lines of ink appear
disjointed, chicken scratch
the paper was
turned in on time,
at least
eyelids
feel like rocks
barely open
head on a desk
awaken to receive
detention
deadlines
standardized tests
college
career
so much
PRESSURE
for someone who cannot
even buy cigarettes
