[Assistant Chief Medical Officer's log, Stardate 1513.1]

Chief Medical Officer McCoy, Captain Kirk, and crewman Darnell are beaming down to planet M-113 to perform a routine medical examination of the archaeologist and his wife who are stationed there.

On a side note, it is not widely known, but McCoy's old girlfriend is the archaeologist's wife, Nancy. This meant I offered to go instead, if only to spare him the potential awkwardness and drama this could cause. However, he insisted that he was a grown man and could handle it like a professional. So, I had no choice but to let him go and hope for the best. He could get a bit...weird about things like this.

I figure he'll be alright, though. Like he said, he's a grown man and can still perform his duties, even when things get a little hairy.

It's one of the many things I admire about him.

So, I told him to keep me posted and patted his shoulder before shooing him to the transporter room...trying to ignore the fact that, for some reason, I had a bad feeling something wouldn't go according to plan.

The away party was back within an hour and Darnell was dead! I frown.

"Leonard?" I ask worriedly. "What happened?" I ask. Leonard frowns.

"That's what I intend to find out." I nod.

"Anything I can do?" He gives me a small smile.

"Sure. Hand me that PADD. I need to begin the autopsy report." I sigh and hand it over. Together, we work in silence on the report. I frown.

"Bones, what was it they said killed Darnell?"

"Borgia plant." I cock a brow, setting my PADD down.

"Borgia? But- -"

"I know. No signs of alkaloid poisoning. I know." That meant he didn't know how the man died, but did know it was not the Borgia plant.

So what was it?

Jim was down in Medbay almost ten minutes later, and we still had no idea what had killed Darnell.

"Why the frown, Bones?" Jim asks.

"She called it a Borgia plant." Bones reports, still frowning.

"Something new to me." Kirk replies casually.

"But not to us." I reply. "Jim- -" We're interrupted by Spock hailing us with his analysis.

"Bridge to Dispensary." He calls. Jim hits a button.

"Go ahead, Mr. Spock."

"Borgia plant listed in library record tapes as carbon group three vegetation, similar to earth nightshade family. Alkaloid poison." He reports. "Chemical structure common to most Class M planets. About the strange mottling on his facial skin surface, there is no reference to this symptom."
