Ian and Kyle's House

Michael came out of the kitchen to resume his watching for the boy on the bike. When there was a knock at the front door he raced to answer the door. The was a strange man and a boy at the door. "Hi there little fella I'm Shane and Kyle is expecting me." Michael did a slow burn as the guy called him a little fella. Ian had left him at the MAN of the house and he was NOT a little fella. John and Daley were little fellas.

Didn'tthis jerk see the difference? "Come on in." He waved them into the dining room. "Kyle is in the kitchen. I'll go and get him." He grumbled to himself as he walked into the kitchen. If he could've had his way this jerk would have waited outside and he would have just let the boy in.

"Kyle there is a jerk and a boy waiting in the dining room for you," Michael announced a little too loudly. Kyle turned to laugh from the sink and dried his hands on the towel hanging from his waist. "Why would he be a jerk Michael?" Michael glowered "Because he called me a little fella! that's for babies! Not the man of the house!"

Kyle grinned "Okay Michael I will set him straight on who is the man of the house today."Michael nodded "Can you go back to watching for Evan he is the one coming on his bicycle." Michael dashed off passing a giggling boy and one very red-faced man on his way to the front door.

Kyle laughed as soon as he saw Shane's red face. "See kids hate me!" Shane whined. Kyle took pity on the embarrassed young man. "The term little fella is reserved for pre-schoolers, not nine-year-olds. Especially a certain nine-year-old named Michael who was appointed as the man of the house today by our fearless leader." Shane turned even redder. "Oh, man! I like insulted the little... I mean guy...I mean man, Well you know what I mean. Am I ever going to get it right?"

Lucas was giggling so hard that he was having a hard time staying in his chair. Kyle sighed and sat down setting the oven timer on the table. "I've got pumpkin pies in the oven. Don't worry you'll get it right, eventually, and Michael doesn't know you like the rest of us do. You mean well you just don't always get the words right. Try and remember boys are just men in training."

Kyle turned his attention to Lucas. "I'm sorry about your mom."Lucas quit giggling and teared up. I've called Father Steins and he's going to say a few words over her grave. Is that okay with you?" Lucas nodded. "We never went to church, Mom always had to work on Sundays, but I don't think she'd mind." Kyle smiled softly as Lucas tried to hold in the tears. "Come here Lucas you can cry on me, I don't melt." Lucas slowly made his way to Kyle and was wrapped in his arms where he cried softly.

"Mom just wouldn't wake up. At first, I thought she was just asleep on the couch, she does that sometimes because she's so tired from working long shifts in the factory over in Black Wolf. but then I saw her face and knew..." He couldn't continue and cried harder. "It's okay Lucas you don't have to talk about anything you don't want to but if you do want or need to talk I am always here willing to listen. You're going to live with us now so you don't need to worry about anything." Lucas nodded into Kyle's shoulder and continued to cry softly.

Michael was watching that Jed guy pull his truck out of the yard next door and park it by the curb, the little boy that had been with him was still inside when he saw a boy on a bike coming down the street just as fast as he could pedal. "Kyle that Evan kid is here!" He watched the kid dump his bike in the front yard, falling off of it in the process, and stumble up the stairs blindly with tears streaming down his face. Michael barely got the door open for him, convinced the boy would never see it, he had missed the mailbox by a breath.
