One Shot #3

“Claw Marks”

“Mom! I got to go!” I shouted as I grabbed my bag on the couch.

“Okay, Charlie honey. Take care,” Mom shouted from the back. Looking through my shoulder, I nodded at her statement. I turned the knob and headed my way out of our house.

I breathed in heavily and it felt...

     ODD.

The morning breeze seemed cold though it’s too sunny. Turning my head to the left and to the right as I walked my way down the block, I have realized that none of our neighbours were out there.

“Great, now this is totally strange,” I said to myself. It’s too unusual. I mean, you would usually catch Mr. and Mrs. Walkins strolling every morning but now, there are no signs of them. Oh! Or maybe they went tired today and decided not to go on a stroll? Well, either between those two situations, I still find this morning odd.

Suddenly, a thing hit my head. “Ouch! Who the-” I exclaimed and turned around to see who did that.

“You looked like an angry squirrel!” Lucas laughed hard while holding his tummy.

“And you looked like a skinny funky donkey while laughing out that loud.” I scoffed and turned my back to him. Yes, Lucas is my best friend ever since we were five. He’s always a big tease but no drama; he’s totally cool to be with. I heard loud foot thuds coming from my back and that’s definitely from him.

“Hey, you got the news?” He asked as he tried to catch up my pace. I gave him a stern look. “Man! You got no idea at all?!” He said in a high pitched voice. I shook my head.

“Seriously?” scratching the back of his head, he continued talking. “Okay, there’s a new kid on the block and guess what they are Adams. Last night, when they came, a hoax just spread. Paps told us something about them. They were once kicked out from Derry, you know that nearby city?”

“Yeah, I heard that city is full of sewer.” I nodded and gestured him to continue his talking. “As I was saying, they were kicked out…only for the reason they were accused of kidnapping and murdering kids. Worst case scenario came, they were allegedly demons.” Lucas screamed and pedalled his bike as fast he could. On my surprise, I started running too. “Hey Lucas! Wait!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. Adrenaline kicked in my system; I was able to catch him up and hitched a ride on his bike. Lucas was then again laughing and he said “You are such a big coward, Charlie.” This time, I punched his back that hard but he continued laughing.

A question came into my mind. “Lucs? You mentioned about the Adams earlier, how do they look like?” I slowly inquired. With no hesitation, Lucas answered, “Paps said they look thin and pale. Their clothes are all black, sometimes covering their skin.” He stopped pedalling. I looked around and realized that we finally reached the school. I stepped down the bike and dusted my pants. “We might bump into them, Charlie. We might not know,” he said with the hint of mystery in his voice as he parked his bike.

My mind is now occupied by the idea of the new family on the block. “Adams,” I uttered repeatedly as I stared blankly on the ground. Based on Lucas’ story, Adams was mysteriously weird. “Adams,” I uttered it once more.

“Were you calling me?” An unfamiliar voice said. Chills started to run down my spine. I tried not to look up but an unfamiliar force made me do such. Thin and pale, worn black long-sleeved dress, orbs that were really scarlet in colour, long black hair was braided back. “A-a-a-a-d” I said stutteringly.
