Alyson walked through the halls of the school. She placed her Math books in her locker as the last class of the day had just ended. She closed her locker shut only to be spooked by Noah leaning against the locker to her right.

"Can I help you?" Alyson asked trying to stay calm. This boy was really beginning to annoy her.

Noah rolled his eyes. "Would you stop asking me that?" Alyson shrugged and walked away. Noah lunged forward and gripped her arm. "Where are you going?"

Alyson jerked her arm. "Let go of me!" she said sternly but soft. She stared into Noah's eyes with anger.

As Noah stared into Alyson's eyes, he could have sworn he saw sparks of fire burning amidst the blue. He released Alyson's arm, and she swiftly turned on him walking away; blonde curls flinging into his face. Noah sprinted forward to catch up. "Why don't you keep your books in your backpack?" Noah questioned.

Alyson responded without a simple glance over to him, "I like to keep them in my locker. It makes my backpack lighter." She swiftly swung open the metal doors to outside. The Autumn chill ran up her spine making it cold.

Noah continued to walk beside her. "What about homework? How do you remember all the homework you have?"

Alyson kept on walking towards the red KIA that was waiting for her in the parking lot. "I have another set of textbooks at home so I don't have to transport them back and forth."

Noah slowed his pace, confusion written all over him. "Then what's with the backpack?" He raced forward once more.

"For certain things," she replied.

"I can carry it for you," he insisted.

She finally turned towards Noah, her facial expression told him she was becoming annoyed by him and irritated. "Look, Noah, I don't know what kind of game you're playing, but leave me out of it." She walked around the SUV to hop into the passengers side.

"What game?" Noah asked, throwing his hands into the air. "Can't I simple just meet the new girl?"

Alyson stared at him for the last time. "No, you cannot." She opened the car door and got inside. "Can we please leave, Mom?" she asked her Mother before she could say anything else.

Lilith glanced from her daughter to the boy outside the car. "Who is he?" she asked.

"Please, just drive!" Alyson begged. Her Mother stepped on the gas peddle and off they went, leaving Noah behind.

Alyson sighed and slumped down in her seat as they drove away from the school. She prayed that her Mother wouldn't mention anything about what had just happened, but that was wishful thinking.

"Are you going to answer my question?" Lilith asked her daughter. She glanced over at her daughter for a brief second. "Who was that boy?"

Alyson rolled her eyes. She really didn't want to talk about this right now. "Noah Fletcher," she answered plainly. "Just some annoying guy."

Lilith chuckled silently. "I take it you didn't make any friends then?"

Alyson smirked. "Friends? When have I ever had any friends, Mom?" her voice grew softer.

"Alyson," her Mother began, "you're seventeen, you're in junior high. Isn't it good to make friends? He seemed interested in you."

Alyson shook her head. "If he knew who I really was he'd be less interested. Dad says I can't have any friends anyway. It puts me at too great a risk."

Lilith sighed heavily. "Your Father can be pretty protective when it comes to your gifts-"

"Gifts?!" Alyson interrupted, swinging her head towards her Mother. "What gift? You mean curse!"

"Alyson," Lilith said calmingly. "It's not a curse, dear. You have your dad's heritage. That makes you special!"

Alyson felt hot tears against her cheeks. "Special? I'm not ten years old anymore, Mom. I don't believe in those stories anymore! You can stop lying to me."

Those words stung Lilith. "Lying to you? Darling, I'm your Mother. I wouldn't lie to you."

The car pulled into the drive way, and Alyson leaped out of the car. "You honestly expect me to believe that my father was a dragon? That a witch changed him so you two could be together? That she gave me a "gift" to keep the dragons alive?" Alyson wiped her eyes. "When am I going to get some honest answers?"

Alyson ran inside the house leaving her Mother in the car.

Lilith looked towards the sky through the sun roof of the car. "Please let her understand," she whispered. Then she stepped out of the car and into the house.

Lilith plopped herself down gently onto the couch. She stroked her belly as she propped her feet up on a stool. She looked down at her slowly growing stomach. She would have to tell Alyson soon. She couldn't keep the baby a secret forever. In just a couple more months, how would she describe all the suddenly gained weight to her daughter?

Alyson had always told her Mother that she was scared to have a younger sibling. She was afraid they'd come out as the perfect child and be terrified of how Alyson looked and call her a monster. She was dreading how much her parents would love that perfect child and ignore her the rest of her life.

"How am I going to tell her?" Lilith asked herself resting a hand on her still-tiny-belly.

Alyson laid sprawled out across her bed. She didn't feel like moving; she wanted to remain on her bed for the rest of her life. But she began to feel cramps in her back. Alyson sat up and slowly removed the straps from her backpack off her back. After carefully prying off the backpack, she sat the backpack on the ground against her dresser, a huge hole cut from the back.

Alyson looked at herself in the mirror as crisp white wings spread out across her back and filled almost the entire room. It felt so good to stretch her wings. She hated that backpack. She hated having to hide herself from the outside world... she hated who she was. Why couldn't she be like any other normal girl?

Alyson looked at herself closer in the mirror. She was far from normal! Her ghostly pale skin and white wings told her that much, but also how she could make small flames of fire erupt from her mouth to warm her hands was enough. She watched herself closely in the mirror. Her eyes tearing up. When Alyson blinked, her azure blue eyes changed to neon green— her pupils now vertical instead of round.

Alyson gasped and covered her mouth. She blinked again and they changed back to her normal blue eyes. Even after all these years, things were still changing inside of her.

Alyson fell to her knees on the gray carpet. She cupped her head in her hands and let the tears pour from her eyes.
