“Great rehearsal, everyone,” Scott said taking a sip out of his water bottle. “Do you guys want-.” He was quickly cut off by Kirstie’s ringing cell phone.
“Hello,” Kirstie said into her phone. “Ok, I’ll be out in a minute.” She hung up and put her phone in her purse.
“Anyway, do you guys want to go out for dinner somewhere tonight?”
“I can’t,” Kirstie replied heading for the door. “Devon wants to, um, take me out to a movie.”
“Didn’t you guys already see a movie today?” Avi questioned.
“Dinner!” Kirstie said, correcting herself. “I mean dinner, um. I have to go. Bye.” She picked her purse up from off the couch and headed for the door.
“Ok, bye,” Mitch said to her as she left.
“That was really strange,” Kevin said. “So, food? Are we going somewhere or what?” Kevin asked changing the subject abruptly.
“Yeah!” Scott said. “I mean, if you guys are up for it. There’s a really cool Chinese restaurant close to the hotel if we want to go there.”
“I think I’m just going to go back to the hotel,” Avi began. He was still focused on finding out why Kirstie seemed to be so out of it today. “I’m really tired.”
“But you love Chinese food!” Mitch said. “Are you sure you don’t want to go?”
“Yeah, I’m sure,” Avi replied. “I’ll see you guys when you get back.” With that, Avi left to go back to the hotel and Mitch, Scott, and Kevin went out to eat.

As Avi was pulling into the hotel parking lot, he could see Devon walking out of the front doors. He was obviously angry; his fists were balled and he was almost running out of the hotel. Devon got into his car, backed into a sign, then drove away.
“I wonder what that was about,” Avi said out loud, but to himself. He got out of his car and began walking in the hotel doors. Avi suddenly stopped dead in his tracks, realizing what was wrong. “Kirstie!” he shouted, running through the hotel lobby and up the stairs to Kirstie’s room.
Avi pounded on the door. “Kirstie!” he shouted behind the locked door. He dug through his pockets for her room key, trying two others before finding the right one. “Kirstie!” he called again opening the door to her room. He quickly got quiet to see if he could hear her, anything, or anyone in the room. Avi heard crying and scanned the room for the source. There, huddled in the corner, was Kirstie.
“Kirstie,” he whispered. Avi quickly ran over and kneeled beside her. “Oh my gosh. What’s wrong? Are you ok? Did Devon do this to you?”
Kirstie nodded.
“Where did he go?” Avi demanded, standing up.
“I don’t know,” Kirstie said choking back tears. “But I’m afraid he’s going to come back.” She removed her hands from her face revealing a black eye and then looked up at Avi, tears streaming down her face. “Help me,” she whispered.
