Part 4.
"The Way Home"
~ ~ ~
Dimitri had a nightmare that same night when he went to bed.
He awoke with a start, drenched in sweat and laboring to breathe. He clutched at his heart where an icy dark hand had pierced him.
In the dream, it was just a dream. He kept telling himself that over and over.
A dark shadowy figure had been walking towards him out on the moonlit grounds. It was obviously imagery that Alice had put in his head.
Silver eyes had shone out of a dark face and he remembered thinking he'd never seen pure evil before.
Those eyes had been the most terrifying thing he'd ever witnessed and then that long hand had extended towards him...
He'd been frozen in place as the sharp nails started carving into his flesh.
He shook himself, getting up to go splash water on his face and get a glass of milk downstairs before going back to bed. He stopped in at his bathroom again to pop a few Klonopins before going back to bed.
It was just a nightmare, he told himself firmly, a pretty silly and generic one at that. With these comforting thoughts, and the air of the sedative, he was soon fast asleep once more.
And while he slept, he dreamed.
###
Dimitri was running down a long, dark corridor in his institute. No one was around and it was terribly cold, as if someone had left the windows open.
As he passed the familiar nurses' station, he saw that everything was rotting and in decay. As if the whole place had been abandoned for years.
He knew he was dreaming, but the contact of his shoes on the linoleum felt so real.
Suddenly a figure stepped out from an open doorway and he skidded to a stop when he saw that it was Alice. She was dressed in a long white nightgown, her hand wrapped around her damn necklace.
"Alice, what are you doing here?"
"Dr. Snow! What are you doing here? You shouldn't be here..." She looked back down the hallway the way he'd come and her already pale face grew more so. "You need to get out of here. Now. Leave the institute!"
"What? Why? Alice, what's going on?" He turned to look behind him and was sure his own face drained of color when he saw the tall, shadowy figure standing there at the end of the hall.
It wanted him to feel fear, he was sure of it.
"What is that?" he whispered. "Alice?"
"Just run!"
"I can't leave you!"
"It would never hurt me. Stephan won't let it. It's you it wants! Run! Go!"
Dimitri was highly conflicted. His body certainly wanted to keep running. He looked back down the hall and saw that the figure had moved significantly closer. He could see its shining silver eyes now and he bit back a shriek.
