Harry had been dreading this day, this was usually the time he would have his mother drive him to the London hospital to visit his girlfriend, Sofia, who he had been with for 3 years. It wasn't the part of visiting her that he hated, he loved her with all his might, he just hated seeing her in so much pain she had from leukemia. It was the first day of spring and it was a matter of days she had left...if lucky.
"Harry, I know you've been a little down lately. What do you say after this we go to the movies, just me and you?" His mother asked. She turned into an open neighborhood, probably since he looked anxious by the way he repeatedly tapped his left foot like he always did when he was nervous.
"My girlfriend, the love of my life, is dying and all you can think about is movies?" He glared angrily at her. She had never liked Sofia since day one so of course this attitude from her is expected.
"Honey you are only seventeen. In six months you will be a senior and then months after that off to college far away from me. I just wanted to spend as much time with you as possible."
"And Sofia has nearly a week to LIVE," he argued back. He crossed his arms and turned back to the many houses passing the window. An elderly lady was planting some red roses in her front garden with her granddaughter, smiling and laughing. Has been a long time since he did something as simple as that.
"I'm going to say this. Just putting it out there. You knew her situation when you got with her."
"Stop the car," he demanded.
"What?"
"I said stop the car dammit!"
She did as he said. He slammed the door shut and walked in the direction of the hospital even though it was another thirty minutes away.
"Harold Styles you are being absolutely ridiculous. Get back in this car." She drove slowly near the curb so other cars could pass around her.
"No."
"If I apologize will you get back in?"
Harry thought it over and hastily replied, "maybe."
"I am sorry son. I'll drop the whole Sofia thing, for your sake."
"Don't do it for me mum. Do it for her, she is all that matters right now."
"Okay," she nodded.
Harry got back into the large, grey SUV and re-buckled his seat belt. As they exited the neighborhood they could see the large hospital right over the hill. In the next five minutes they would be entering the hospital and in Sofia's room. Thanks to the delay of his anger he would have only an hour to see her. As for his mother she would just mess with the snack vending machine and read a couple magazines in the waiting lobby. They parked in the nearest parking space near the entrance and walked in. Immediately the smell of medicine and chemicals filled his nostrils and all Harry wanted to do was throw-up.
"Hey Mrs. Williams, I'm here to visit Sofia Willington," he told the receptionist.
"Oh hey Mr. Styles. Go on ahead, she should be waking up from her nap now." She pointed to the elevator with the end of her black ballpoint pen.
Harry turned to his mother only to find she had already taken a seat in one of the chairs. He shook his head and entered the elevator. As the doors slowly closed in case anybody else wanted to get on his fears reached their high point. He really hoped nothing went wrong today.
