Today is a drill. Basically everything has been closed down due to the army man orders. Though its more unsettling because even when they say it's a drill, you could hear distance gunshots. Everyone in the house was trying to hide their fear.
My parents huddle together as they had a radio nearby while watching the news or, whatever is on really. Me and my brother on the other hand, decided to stay down stairs as we could hear the muffled Tv above. My brother was on the computer, doing research on the current events while of course, trying to tell me all the reports and such at the same time. I don't pay attention though, as I kept checking my phone for any recent texts. Its nothing other than one message from earlier. From her.
"We're heading out now. My parents say the sooner we leave, the better. I'm sorry.." Sent at 6:37 A.M. just before the drill. I clutched onto my phone, rereading the message.
"Wooww.. She just basically left us to die." I viciously turned, moving a little off the beanbag as I was surprised to see my brother hovering right over my shoulder.
"And where did you come from?!?" He frowned as he crossed his arms.
"Have you even listen to me? Or were you just busy thinking about your girlfriend'." He said as if mocking, making the hand gestures of quotation marks. I set myself back onto the beanbag, trying not be bothered.
"Well yes I was worrying about her, and what you're telling me isn't helping."
"It probably isn't but are you even paying attention to the signs though? Have you even tried to look into this?! People disappearing, gunshots, people attacking others due to some sort of illness? Even reports of cannibalism!?!.. We're in an apocalypse! There is like zombies out there!! They're keeping us cooped up and with your girlfriend leaving, it left us in danger!" my eyes widen as the sudden silenced kicked in. What could I even say? I know I've been trying to avoid my surroundings just to comfort her. I know everything has been slowly rising up to a nightmare. I know people either just have been trying to avoid the thought or even flat out lie. I know all that and how I even became like that but, what I didn't understand was the last statement. I tried to sort out my words as I felt a twist in my stomach.
"What.. Makes you say that?.. About her leaving?.." Angelo then looked off, looking now unsure about the last statement as well.
"I mean, sorry. Should've said it was a theory but, it'd connect really well right now. We're protected in this town, right? And when we're protected, there's a possible fence or such boarding around. If she left before the uh, drill, that means her and her family damaged the boarding which leads to then something they kept trying to hide from us to come in." It felt reasonable, but I couldn't believe it. Or at least, I didn't want to.
Then sudden loud thumps were heard as we then see our father looking terrified as he tries to calmly speak out,
"Pack up whatever you think you need to live. We have to leave as soon as we can." He then suddenly left in such hurry. Of course, we decide to obey without question. While Angelo runs around grabbing off some objects and stuffing it into his bag, I was able to pack a small snack, water, a pocket knife, lighter, a clean pair of clothes and a blanket. While of course checking around to see if I do need anything important more, I was able to spot a photo looking back at me. The whole group.. Containing Me, Angelo, Rosaria, Rosaria's friend Nelly, and a friend of mine, Cael. I don't know what it was but staring at the photo felt so calming, I almost forgot about all the hell that has been happening. We looked so happy.. Together..
"Kito!! Angelo!! Whatever you have now, take it and leave!!" without second thought I stuffed the photo in my sweater pocket with my phone and quickly rushed upstairs. I got up to look around to see that no one was around. Puzzled I begin to figure out where they have went. I then stopped my tracks as I saw a stranger, walking straight into my home as if they were injured in the leg. I stayed frozen as i examined the stranger. He looked wounded, as if he had marks around his stomach and bleeding all over. He even seemed as if he was drooling.
I felt uncomfortable, no, afraid.
Slowly, I begin to back up, leading him into the kitchen. If I at least don't know where to run, then I should at least bring him where it's easier for me to grab defense. Entering the kitchen, I quickly grabbed out a frying pan. Looking back at the guy, he already managed to catch up now hovering right above ready to come down at me.
"This was an awful idea." I said to myself as I held the frying pan up, trying to scoot away.
"You're damn right it is!!" hearing the familiar voice, I looked up to see the guy now with a machete through his head. I clutched onto the frying pan harder as everything went blank.
~~
"Hey Kito you feeling alright?.." everything came back into focus. I looked around as to see the whole family is in the car, even me still holding the frying pan. There goes the thought of waking up from a nightmare.
"You know.. Back there was my fault. I should've stayed back for you to follow. Though I thought you would understood to head straight to the car." I heard my father say, looking back towards me if he was upset a little. That there was my fault but, I was too shaken to say.
"Well, thank the heavens you're not harmed. You worried everyone, even Angelo! He had to check to make sure you weren't harmed, not even a scratch!" I turned as I could see the anger but relief in his eyes. I worded out that I should've listen. The anger then slightly goes away.
It was nothing but silence until me and Angelo looked outside, to see nothing but what looked as a damaged city. There was fire still going on, buildings looked as if collapsed or bombed. Even a huge cloud of smoke hovers around the abandoned nightmare of a so called city. I turned to Angelo as our eyes met, we both shared the same thought; this is no longer something strange going on. This is something serious. Something dangerous.
All sudden dad looses control of the car, which was brought into sudden panic. We don't know what caused the events but all we figured out beforehand, is that we'll crash and we'll be stuck. When it finally stopped, everything faded into darkness and pain.
