Justin's POV
I replayed everything that happened with Lily in my mind. Her excitement over the stuffed swan, Lily eating cotton candy as if it was for the first time in her life. How she kindly gave the homeless man her coffee. It was then that I realized I didn't even know her last name.
Fredo, Za and I went to back to the beach looking for Lily among the throngs of beach-goers, but she was nowhere to be seen. I pulled my hat a bit lower on my head and adjusted my sunglasses so that I hopefully wouldn't be recognized. I was thankful for my now shorter hair.
"I feel like I'm going crazy" I sighed, frustrated. "I couldn't have dreamed about her twice?"
"Maybe, she figured out who you were and decided she didn't want to deal with the stress of being with someone as famous as you."
"Maybe!" I pouted, tossing a plastic cup at him.
"Take a Xanax, dude! You'll see her again," Fredo said, adjusting his headphones.
"Maybe she got mugged. Or kidnapped." Za added.
"It would have been on the news, fool" Fredo said, laughing and shaking his head.
"A lot of help you guys are, plus who the hell watches the news?" I shouted back. But then I thought of Lily, helpless, like a caged bird. "Could it be true, could something have happened to her?"
"You both need to get out more," Za complained.
"This is making me crazy!" I shouted.
"Chill out! Maybe she's sick," Fredo finally said. "Did you ever think of that? She is human after all."
"She did have cramps at the pier," I remembered, sitting down next to him on a bench.
"Maybe it's her time of the month! She took the day off to relax, eat some Ben and Jerry's and bawl her eyes out talking on the phone to her best friend."
"You think so?" I asked eagerly.
"I know so! You've seen how psycho Selena used to get when you guys were together- one minute she flew off the handle because the toilet seat was left up, the next minute she was crying after watching your performance of UP on YouTube. Believe me; you're better off not seeing her!"
I returned to my spot on the pier to look out at the ocean and leaned on the metal railing. Maybe Fredo was right. But what if I never saw here again. I think I might be in love.
Who was this girl? Where did she go? And would I ever find out?
I fingered the necklace in my pocket, more confused than ever.
"You've been zoned out a lot lately, man," Fredo said looking over at the water as it hit the rocks below the pier, after I filled him and Za in on more of what happened when we were together. "Totally Twilight Zoned! Like now I think maybe you really dreamed it."
"It's almost like a sick, twisted nightmare to me," I said. "I see her underwater, then I don't. I see her at the beach, then I don't. I see her at the pier, and then I don't. Lily . . . that's all I know. She just ran away and I don't even know her last name or her phone number."
"You think you know," Za interjected, laughing. "Her name could really be George."
"Ha, ha, funny." I frowned. "She was definitely not a man. I am starting to think though that I'll never see her again.
Lily's POV
Everything was coming back to me. I squinted into the pastel sunset and sat up slowly, afraid to look at my tail. I was afraid I might go into shock if it was missing again. Even though it had happened before, it wasn't any less scary now.
At least this time I came prepared where clothes were concerned. I did not want to get caught naked again. I had strapped on a pink tube top and a skirt and tied it to my back with a couple shells. They both made it safely through the transformation without being destroyed. I changed quickly behind one of the tall booths that had "lifeguard" written on it. Thankfully no one was close enough to see me. Something seemed different about the time of day, however. The moon was much higher in the sky.
I walked closer to the pier where humans were draped on the pier and clustered on the beach like stars in the midnight sky. Hundreds of people were talking, singing, dancing, running wild. How was I ever supposed to find Justin in this crowd?
I spotted a girl in dark clothes that I thought I recognized from my last trip. "Have you seen Justin?" I asked, tapping her on the shoulder.
"Justin who?" she answered, turning around. Only it wasn't a girl in dark clothes, after all. It was a guy!
"Have you seen Justin?" I asked a tall man with a beard.
"Is that his name?" the man answered, relieved. "He's been sitting over there with my wife. Totally whining, looking everywhere for you!"
I eagerly followed the man. But sitting next to his wife wasn't my love. It was a dog!
"Have you seen Justin? He's not an animal, he lives in Calabasas," I asked a teenaged couple.
"Everyone in LA sucks!" the girl answered, as her shaggy haired boyfriend grabbed her. "Get off already," the girl said playfully to her boyfriend as they walked off.
Brightly colored lanterns hung all over the pier, between the trees and around the statues, with a spectacular view of the ocean below. There seemed to be some type of celebration happening. There were people dancing and bopping on the lawn around a flagpole. A makeshift tiki hut housed a snack bar, and speakers hung from the palm trees cranking playing music from large rectangular, black boxes. The singer's voice sounding oddly like Justin's as he sang "If I was your boyfriend, never let you go."
The entire pier was bustling with excitement when different colors sparkled and burst across the sky with loud booms that made everyone stop and stare. A lot of the humans were oohing and aahing as the colors continued to explode across the dark sky.
But I feared the only thing that would be exploding soon would be my heart if I didn't find Justin.
