The Story Before The Story

Warm, summer air gently caressed the bright face of a young girl who was only days away from her first day of high school. She had worked her magic all summer in order to get a cell phone like the rest of her friends before school started. As luck played its part on her side, she was granted the wish. The cell phone wasn't the newest, nor was it the best looking, but the flip phone that had previously been her moms was better than nothing.

"You should text Nate and Zahn, see if they can come over tomorrow," Kylie, her best friend said with a smile as she pulled handfuls of grass out of the ground they were sitting on. The sound of her brother, Nate, splashing in the pool made her look away from Kylie's hands.

"Should I?" She asked her, completely excited over the thought of having her boyfriend come over. At first it was weird that he had the same name as her older brother but the awkwardness disappeared quickly. They were best friends before they started dating in November. If it wasn't for their friends pushing them together, their relationship would have never happened.

"You should, it would be fun!"

She was right, she thought, it would be. Her parents were in California and her brother, Nate, was going to be picked up by her other brother, Kyle, within the next hour. The only other person she had to worry about was her grandma. Her grandma was senile enough that she could commit mass murder in front of her RV, the one placed in the front yard, and she wouldn't even know.

"Okay, I'll text Nate."

Flipping her phone open, she typed in the number she knew by heart. Even though it had only been two weeks she had quickly learned her way around the key pad without having to look. As she watched her brother climb up the ladder of the pool she sent the text without looking. Flipping the phone shut, she looked back over at Kylie who was still pulling out handfuls of grass.

By the time morning had come the two girls had become disappointed when there had still been no reply from Nate. Taking the silence as a no, they made new plans. After watching movies until midnight they moved the party outside. After talking for an hour, the two girls fell asleep on the back porch. Growing up in the country it wasn't a difficult thing to do.

When morning came, she checked her phone, in case Nate had replied, but was greeted by an unknown number. Confused, she went back and checked if there were any previous messages she had previously missed. Much to her surprise, she had texted the unknown number first.

That's how it all began, that's how she met her best friend, Daniel.

However, her senior year of high school began with news of Daniel's departure from America.

That's when it ended, her friendship with her best friend. He never texted, he never called, he never emailed, and he never sent a letter. The person she trusted with all of her secrets was gone.
