"Watch where you're going!" The mystery guy growled at me. Any thoughts about his gorgeousness flew out the door. He had a bad attitude and mood to match.
"Hey Jordan. Looking for Kai? Sorry mate you just missed him. He left about five minutes ago."
"Damn it. I was supposed catch him before he left. So not only have I missed him I now have a sore head to contend with."
A scowl marred his features. My first impression of him had been wrong. I was wrong about Daniel and I was wrong about this guy. What was wrong with me and my ability to read guys.
"Hey Jord. I'd like to introduce you to Izzy. Izzy, meet Jordan. The younger brother of my business partner and good mate Kai."
I stuck my hand out politely although the last thing I wanted was to be civil with him. Guys like that, they didn't deserve my attention. All I wanted was to get my car going again and head back to a warm bed.
"So klutzy has a name. Nice to meet you Izzy although I think the name klutzy suits you better." I stood rooted to the ground as he laughed at his own joke. I turned to Zac to ask if we could leave yet but he was on the phone, his face pale.
"Sorry guys. I've got to get back home. Britt's having a hard time with the boys and needs an extra pair of hands."
"Do you want me to come with you?" I quickly blurted out the words before I remembered my situation.
"Nah it's ok. Nothing Daddy can't handle. Hey. You still need to get to the petrol station. Jord, can you do me a favour. Take Izzy to the petrol station with the spare can and bring her back to her car. She ran out of fuel and needs a quick top up. I gotta go home now before Britt loses the plot."
The look on Jordan's face looked like he'd rather drink poison. "Ok. Come with me. I'll grab the spare can and take you where you need to go." He ran into the back and returned with the can and started heading towards his car. "Well Izzy, are you coming or not?" Jordan asked.
Zac looked keen to leave and for some reason I was standing there like an idiot. I quickly said goodbye to Zac and jumped into Jordan's car. I sat there in silence not daring to talk or even look at him. Getting my heart trampled made me wary. I dared not speak in case it gave him another reason to call me klutzy.
"So not talking to me huh?"
"Umm..." Somehow the words just wouldn't come out. I felt like a fool. Luckily we pulled into the petrol station and he proceeded to fill up the can giving me an excuse to go and pay. The ride back wasn't any better. I was relieved when we started approaching my car. I turned to bid a hasty farewell when Jordan suddenly put his hand on my arm.
"Look I'm sorry about before. I was acting like a bear with a sore head. Literally. Can we start again. Hi I'm Jordan. Kai's younger brother. Pleased to meet you." His expression had softened. His look seemed genuine.
I felt my resolve melting a little bit. "Hi I'm Izzy. Pleased to meet you. I'm the new Nanny for Zac and Brittany's twins." We laughed a little and broke the tension.
"Do you think I could pop round the house and see you sometime. I mean as a friend. I know you are new in town and it's always good to make new friends.
"Sure. Why not." I was glad that he emphasised the friend part. The last thing I wanted to do was jump into another relationship. My heart was still bruised and it would be for a long time.
"Ok klutzy. Take care. See you around."
I exited the car. Filled my tank up from the can and carefully placed it near the door of the shop and continued on my journey. It had been a long day and I needed the rest.
The next few days passed very quickly and soon enough it was official moving day. I had organised for some of my stuff to be sent to me. My parents were surprised but understanding of my new posting. They had no idea of the heartache that had brought me here but they could see I was happy to begin a new position and supported me one hundred percent.
Parking my car outside the pretty weatherboard house I surveyed the place that would be my home for the time being. Pretty pink rose bushes flanked either side of the front door and lush plants complimented the garden. I could tell this was a home that was well cared for and I was excited to be a part of this household. I knew it would take a bit of time but Joshua and Jacob would warm to me and I'd feel good about myself again.
I knocked quietly even though Brittany had given me my own key. It seemed rude to just barge in, especially on my first day. However after the third knock and no answer I decided to unlock the door and enter the house myself. As I had received no answer I'd expected the house to deserted or at least for the family to be upstairs. Imagine my surprise at hearing the twins giggle with joy and a male voice singing a lively song. I headed towards the kitchen where I found Joshua and Jacob in their feeding chairs and Jordan merrily singing and dancing for them. I quickly dropped my bag onto the kitchen table and went up to them. "Hi how are you? Great to see you again." I genuinely meant it. I was glad to see a familiar face around. Jordan stopped singing and jumped back in fright.
"Who are you and what are you doing in the house?!" Jordan was shouting which caused both twins to wail. The commotion brought Brittany downstairs. "This girl. She came out of nowhere. I don't know how she got in but believe me she's going out just as fast." I stood there speechless. How could Jordan have forgotten about me in a matter of days. I've known how it feels to be forgettable but this was unbelievable. I felt vulnerable and suddenly sad.
"Sorry for the confusion but this is Izzy. Our new Nanny." Brittany quickly diffused the situation with her introductions. "And this is Brandon. Our friend Kai's younger brother. He was just watching the boys for me while I had a quick freshen up." I noticed that Brittany was wearing a bathrobe. We must have scared her and brought her running downstairs before she had a chance to get into the bathroom.
"I thought you told me your name was Jordan." I was suddenly confused. Had I misheard and why didn't he remember me. "You must have met my twin brother. My name's definitely Brandon. Sorry for the confusion. It's great to meet you."
