The moment that I heard about it, I knew that I was a Seeker.

The teenagers around me were doing a project on Seekers, and why they were considered outcasts and punished.

It was after my schooling hours so I was completing my after school studies when I heard them. And of course my curiosity got the best of me.

The pleated skirt of my school uniform clung to my legs like a wet cat in the heat. The smell of B.O. was putrid.

The rambunctious children were obnoxious and loud, especially for a library. One girl with a Stiff neck and large teeth read off from a book. I tilted my glasses down so it appeared I wasn't listening.

" Seekers are able to see the bodiless souls and hear them speak. Not as high pitched sounds that we hear, but as true words."

The boy taking notes crinkled his nose in disgust as Big Teeth continued.

"Seekers have the natural ability to have power over all other souls because they are a blip in the system. Other souls play an important part in establishing the city and all of its works by only knowing what they are allowed. Seekers become a threat because they know more, feel more, and they look no different from the rest of us."

The two children gaped at the book, then turned to each other, as if each suspected the other was a Seeker.

I stifled a laugh. But then I froze. That was me. I saw weird shadows, physically heard someone guiding me, and I felt that my senses were overly aware. I listened in, my face pallid at what the government would do.

As if right on cue Big Teeth wrote a quote from our president.

" Any Soul found to be a Seeker will be banished to The Underground for 20 years. After this allotted time their eyelids will be singed together and their ears cut off. If any objects their fingers will be broken one by one. After this is done, they will be held in the town center in a cage for 10 days before being sent back into exile. I can assure you all that no Seeker will slip the system and none will ever be a threat."

I vaguely remember my hands hitting the cold ground before everything went black.
