Chapter 1: Blind
The sound of the wind was calming as it gently caressed my face and ran its fingers through my hair. The grass and flowers all around me danced together as the wind played its slow enchanting melody for them. My eyes fluttered closed and I felt my eyelashes softly kiss my face as my hands rested on my stomach. I was memorizing this moment as all I could see was darkness and all that I could hear was the wind blowing the trees.
A dull ache in my eyes made me sigh as I knew my eyes would have to open soon. Even so, I kept my eyes closed for as long as I could. The pain, slowly moving from dull to bright and sharp. I cleared my mind as I opened my eyes to the breathtaking scene in front of me. A bunch of leaves glided from the trees down into the soft grass. I watched their slow journey as what I was waiting for appeared. Little people. A lot of micro sized little people each sitting on their own leaf as they fell down. I could hear their high pitched screams of joy as they rode the leaves like it was their own boat to sail on the wind.
I sat up to watch the sight better and a smile slowly lit up my face. They all looked so happy as if they were having so much fun, as if nothing else mattered. My smile dropped. Those emotions must feel so good.
Joy.
Happiness.
Excitement.
Freedom.
To feel those things must be wonderful. As far as I know they are only far away feelings meant to be lusted after but never felt.
A panicked cry brought my attention to a leaf spinning wildly out of control. All of the little people were screaming at each other, seemingly fearful of what was to become of their friend. I just watched as the leaf made a crash landing right by my feet. The chilling silence that followed made me look down to see the leaf laying on the ground next to what looked like a little girl. She looked completely normal, with long brown hair in two ponytails and huge grey eyes, except for the beautiful grey wings sticking out from her back. They seemed to shimmer as the sun beamed down on her.
When I began to feel a soft poking at my feet I looked over to see some of the “fairies” trying to get my attention. They looked unsure about what they were doing but continued anyway. When they saw my eyes on them some began to back away but one stared up at me determined to get my help. I stared down into eyes the same shade of grey as the girl’s on the ground as I asked, “What do you want?” It was by no means asked with anger but more with confusion. I didn’t see any reason why these things would pay me attention let alone ask me for help.
“Can you help my sister?” The fairy that asked was obviously her brother but his tone was so high pitched that it left my ears ringing.
My eyes turned back to the girl on the ground to see her limply laying there with her body crushed under a small stick. The blood slowly pooling around her made me sigh before turning around to her brother. “Your sister is dead but I’ll move the stick so you can get her body.” I couldn’t care less about these fairies but if getting the dead little girl would make them leave I would be happy to help.
As I picked up the stick all of the fairies watched silently before slowly walking over to collect the girl’s body. I watched her brother pick her up before turning to me. “ Thank you.” I said nothing as I watched them walk away. I wonder why she didn’t just fly away when her leaf spun out of control. With the joyful cries of the fairies gone I laid back down onto the soft grass and embraced the silence that followed.
I had no idea how long I had been laying there and I didn’t really care. When the rays of the sun disappeared from me I knew someone was in front of me. It didn’t take long for a hand full of my long black hair to be pulled roughly forcing me to sit up on my knees. My bright white eyes opened to stare up into the face of my hateful older sister. Her forest green eyes bore into me as she pulled my hair up farther, pulling me along with it. “Mom said to bring you back to the house.” Her voice had a hard edge to it as she leaned down to look me straight in the eyes. Her shoulder length dirty blond hair blew gently in the wind as we stared at each other silently. I watched the sun beat onto her already tanned skin as it slowly began to set.
