Where It Starts

I found myself staring at the ceiling that evening. The rain stopped, the future still uncertain, the direction I'm aiming for still unclear. But things seem to flow with the direction I'm heading.

I thought of how to survive the night. And how I would survive my stay in this peculiar house.

A baby with two heads.

Literally.

I could remember myself being taken aback by the surprise additional head, especially that it was attached at the back head of the child. It isn't noticeable unless it turns its head. Most parasitic twins must die... But this baby will have the misery of having another head attached to his for the rest of his life. I could only imagine how many sleepless nights the baby will have once it gets its whole being opened to the judgments of the society.

A knock pinched my thoughts back to the maid's room I occupied.

"Kumain ka raw muna bago matulog sabi ni Madam." It was the old maid again. Her voice seemed more friendly this time. "Sumunod ka na lang sa baba, maghahanda pa ako ng gatas nung bata."

"Si--"

A screech coming from the dark room cut my words.

"Naku, si Madam 'yun, si Madam' yun."

For a moment, I found myself just standing there. Perhaps it's because of the confusion and panic. Or maybe I just didn't know what to do.

The next thing I knew, the old maid was already upstairs.

I opted to follow but there was a screech again... But I think it's more of a shrill. Then there was silence.

A long one.

And...

"Madaaam!"

I looked upward and ran upstairs when I realized what was happening.

I couldn't be late.
