Chapter 10

Celebrating my tenth-chapter anniversary! I hope you guys have enjoyed The Dome!

Subject: Ash Hise

Date: April 9

Frozen in place, my eyes scan the person in front of me. Thick goggles cover his eyes, and, like every other soldier I've seen, he's clad in camouflage.

Now I wonder why they have to even wear those kinds of clothes. After all, they're only teaching winged children to fight as super soldiers in their army.

It's not like they go anywhere... Right?

"What are you doing in the hallway, boy?" a rough, scratchy voice asks.

I stammer, "Well, you see..."

The man doesn't wait fo the rest of my reply. His foot collides with my chest, and my back hits the ground hard. A loud thud echoes in the long hallway.

He quickly steps around a bucket of water, clutching his gun in a strangely white-knuckled hand.

I hear a creak as a door swings open behind me. Cameron and Clove storm into the hall, scowling at the soldier.

Their wings, though still fairly small, are spread out completely, making the girls seem larger than life.

I release the breath I'd been holding as the angry girls glare at the man. Slowly, I stand, but every breath wracks me with pain.

I can only watch, helpless, as the man pulls the trigger on his gun.

It catches Clove on the shoulder, taking her by surprise. A trickle of blood pours from the wound, but the bullet seems odd-looking.

Clove falls to the ground in a twisted heap.

The same goes for Cameron, and she utters a faint cry when the bullet pierces the skin on her shoulder.

Finally, I am the only person still standing.

The soldier faces me, his hands now shaking. An odd smile twists his lips for a moment, bringing into view a wicked scar on his face.

I step forward, and can feel my wings twitching.

My hand forms a fist and I punch him square in the jaw. As expected, he blocks it and holds his gun up to my shoulder.

The trigger is pulled for the third time, and I slip into unconsciousness.
