The blaring of the alarm clock pulled me out of my sleep. I was so tired; my body was ridden, weighed with sleep. I threw off the covers and started to walk to turn off the alarm when I tripped over something hard, and fell to the floor.
"ughhhhmrrrfffggg" Chester muffled against the pillow I had thrown at him last night. I had completely forgotten that he had stayed last night. A feeling of alarm pressed against my chest as I got up and ran to the window. I let out a sigh of relief when I saw that they car was still not here. Meaning my aunt and uncle were not home yet. I finally shut off my alarm, its 6:30 am and find that Chester is still asleep. I walk over to him and knelt down beside him. He had pulled my covers off the bed when I got up to shut off the alarm. I smiled to myself and felt a pang in my chest. I cursed myself. I said no more pangs.
"Chester, wake up." I pushed on his shoulder. There was no response. "Chester! Get up!" I pushed harder.
"Chester!" I pulled the covers off of him. He winced at the sudden coldness, then I opened the blinds to my window letting in a massive amount of light. "Bel!" His eyes widened, "What are you doing in my room!?"
I rolled my eyes then gestured around the room to show that it wasn't his.
"Ohhhhhhhhh," He smiled sheepishly at me, "This is your room." He laughed
"We have to get ready for school" I turned from him and walked to my dresser and grabbed clothes.
"Ew."
"Shut up." I laughed, walking toward the door to go to the bathroom for a shower.
"Where are you going?"
"Shower." I waved my clothes at him.
"Can I come?"
"What!?" My eyes widened, my cheeks flushed and then my heart started to race. A mental image of him in the shower naked dripping wet. OKAY STOP.
"Relax, I want to walk you there, THEN find some food." He laughed then pushed my bangs in front of my eyes. "Bell, you naughty girl!" He chuckled at me.
"Shut up Chester." I laughed then proceeded to the bathroom. Once safely inside I locked the door and turned on the shower. I leaned against the door. What was going on with me? Did I have feelings for Chester? I shook my head. That's impossible. I mean Chester? Come on. Sure he is cute, his dark shiny brown hair that always seemed to be in tangles and his crystal bluey green eyes that always gave away his smile before he did so. And his lips and body. I shivered, then reprimanded myself. No shivering. I sighed then got into the shower. Once I was out and dressed I walked downstairs to the kitchen where I figured I would find Chester. I stopped before he noticed I had come down. He was bent over the island on my laptop. What is he doing? I stepped forward and he looked up at me.
"What are you doing?" I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Who's V?" He asked ignoring my question. I felt a panicky feeling slam into my chest. I was a question I couldn't answer, cause I didn't know the answer.
"I don't know," I reached to take my laptop but he pushed it out of reach.
"How does he know me, Bell? He knows what I am, he could put an end to my life!"
"I didn't tell, Chester. Honest!" Panic bubbled over into my voice.
"Anabelle," It was the first time he has ever used my first name. "If the Superiors find out that I've told a human what I am and of the existence of other Energy Garners, They could have me killed!"
My eyes widened in fear and shock and my heart dropped into my stomach. "K-killed?"
"Killed, Bell! Ended, sleeping with the fishes, gotten rid of, murdered!" He moved closer to me and clutched my shoulders with an amazing grip. I felt like I was going to pass out but squashed the feeling. Tears started to well in my eyes. "Chester, I swear I didn't tell!"
"Then how does he know Bell!"
"I don't know! Could someone have figured it out? What about in science? Could someone have saw?" I was racking my brain for possibilities.
"Impossible, I planted those Images in your mind, Everyone else was working anyways. That is until you screamed." Normally he would make some crack about my lame spider excuse, but I guess death blocks out things that could be possibly humorous.
"Oh."
"Only other Garners can tell when a Garner is working. And the only Garners in Pennsylvania is my family."
"How do you know?"
"Because, Garners have to check in at check points every seven years. Otherwise, they'd get away with murder. Literally." I didn't know what to say. My heart was racing a million times a minute. I didn't want Chester to die. I love him! Wait, he is my friend, better. Oh! This isn't the time for that! Okay, think. Chester stood there mumbling to himself looking disheveled. My eyes moved to my laptop still on the counter.
"Wait!" I rushed over and began typing.
"What are you doing?" Chester asked chewing on his nails.
"Sending a message." I said not looking up from the computer screen.
"To who?"
"V."
"What? no!"
"Too late." I hit send and Chester freaked out/
"Why?!"
"Just wait, he always writes back."
"What did you say to him, Bell." His eyes were wide and he looked, I am not sure there is a word for the emotion he was feeling and it was my fault. I brought up what I had written.
Look, I will do whatever you want, just don't hurt Chester. He hasn't done anything. Leave him out of this.
"I don't know, Bell." PING! "Check it!"
Why, Ms. Grey, no hello? That is shameful manners. However, you have no need to worry about your dear, friend, Chester. I have no intention on reporting him to the Superiors. I am curious though as to why he has told you. It is a very rare occasion that a Garner will share his or her secret with a human. Very rare indeed. There have been some cases where a Garner will tell a human about their abilities but as you have come to notice those situations don't seem to end well. All I ask is that you keep your phone on you so that I may reach you to do my bidding.
-V
"Do his bidding? What does that mean?" Chester asked still chewing on his finger nails. His eyes were filled with worry. I didn't have a clue, but I needed Chester to calm down.
"I have no idea."
"Can we trust him though?"
"Yes definitely." I may have lied. I heard a sigh of relief expel the worry from his body.
Instead of messaging V back I signed off. I looked over to Chester who had retired to a barstool at the island. I looked at the clock on the stove. 8:30
"What is today?"
"Wednesday?" He said.
"I was afraid you were gonna say that." I groaned.
"We could, just not go to school." He said and grabbed the new paper off the island. Part of me seriously considered not going.
"No, we have to." I walked up to the bathroom again to fix my hair and makeup.
"I don't feel good." I heard Chester call from down stairs.
"Really?"
"No, I just really don't want to go."
When I was finished I walked back downstairs to find Chester doodling on the newspaper. He looked up at me and smiled.
"You look pretty, Bell"
I blushed but tried to hide it, which most likely failed cause Chester's smile widened.
"Thanks, you ready?"
"I guess, even though I didn't get to shower or change my clothes and I still don't want to go."
I rolled my eyes, "Let's go."
