Chapter 1 - The Troubles

25th of August, 2017

Sunday, 9:00 pm:

"Dinner Time!" Mom yelled from the kitchen downstairs. "Coming!" I replied. I lift my eyes from the homework I had been reading throughout the summer and focus on my empty, dark room, realising I had been reading for a long time. Walking through the hallway I realize the light in my brother's room still off. I walk in and and notice all his books stacked on books for university studies and an examination paper written, Aaron Light - A+. He always stayed focused on his university and his studies. My brother never spent enough time with family and we are all hoping that for once, we will be able to be with him.

Running down the stairs in my PJs, I observe the front door, to my expectations, my dad isn't home either. "He's still at work, isn't he?" I say to my mother in my soft voice. Her smile turns into a frown as she says "Celina, he's working for us... to keep us all happy.". Taking a seat in front of my mother, I sigh at the thought of my dad. "Mom..." She looks up at me "Yes dear?". Deep breathes flow in and out and it finally comes out

"I-I-I don't want start at the new school."

Her expression didn't change but her smile grew a bit wider as if knowing I was going to say it "Celina, you're a fifteen years old and I know it's hard missing everyone back in New York, but your father found work here and I know you are strong enough to take the struggle of being the new girl, I called your aunt Linda yesterday, she is proud of you and wants you to continue with the bravery you have, we are all proud of you." I take a deep breath "I understand Mom, I'll stay strong for us, especially for aunt Linda."

After washing the dishes, I head back up to my room avoiding my brother's dark room. Flicking on the light switch, I see emptiness all around my room, all the boxes filled with our furniture are still downstairs, lined up next to the door. I lay on my mattress on the floor, as my bed frame is still in the boxes. I should probably call my brother... I think to myself as I pick up my phone

Aaron

Oh sorry, I might be busy right now, This is a voicemail system, please leave a message after the beep

Ugh.. His phone is always kept on silent mode

Beep

Aaron, I really want to see you before I start school tomorrow, We miss you. I... miss you please come home Aaron, let's be a fami-

Beep

Thank You, your message has been recorded and will be sent to me after you end this phone call

I hope I can get back to you as soon as possible

Sigh

I place my smartphone on the ground next to my mattress. We are siblings, but we barely see each other, neither do i see my father. Why cant we just be a family? Ive been questioning for a long time, I pick up my book and continue reading.

10:30 pm:

Ding

Message from Aaron Light

Opening my phone, I head straight to the text. It reads:

Hey Celina, I know you're mad at me Sis because I couldn't make it on the day before your new school to help, I am dearly sorry and I'll make sure one day this week, we'll hang out and spend more time together, hopefully with dad as well... Anyway, Good luck now, seeing as I won't see you tomorrow morning as well...
Love you Sis, Goodnight.

Tears appear in my eyes as I read the last few words on the text.

I remember what dad always says to me...

Stay strong and don't let anyone's actions sadden you, only your own.

I repeat his words in my head.

I repeat until I slowly close my eyes and fall asleep as Darkness Falls.
