"What are you doing after school?" Luke asked as he sat beside me in the busy cafeteria.
I pushed the remaining Mac and Cheese around my plate before putting my fork down and looking up at him.
"Nothing."
Even though Luke was sitting right beside me, he still towered over me.
He was one of those guys who was abnormally tall, but wasn't lanky and out of proportion, almost like a basketball player.
"Do you wanna come over and watch a movie?" He asked, twirling his lip ring between his lips.
"What movie?" I asked.
"Divergent?" He suggested, taking a mouthful of my leftover food.
"Why do you always eat my food rather than going and getting your own plate?" I snapped, sounding harsher than I had intended.
"I'm lazy." he laughed, "Besides I could never eat a whole plate of that shit."
"Bring your own lunch?"
"We went over this, I'm too lazy."
We sat in silence for a few moments before Luke spoke again, "So do you want to? Divergent?"
I nodded, "Oh, Yeah. What time do you want me to come?"
"Like, Now?"
"Don't you have classes?" I said, nudging him lightly, "It's not good to skip school Lucas."
"I have double math. I'm good at Math. I don't need to go, I'm way ahead of everyone else anyway."
He was right, he was good at math. He was actually good at most things he tried out. The only thing I could think of off the top of my head that Luke wasn't good at was getting along with people."Alright then, let's go."
"I thought you said it wasn't good to skip school?" He joked, standing up and twirling his bag over his shoulder.
"It's not, so you're lucky I have a double free period this afternoon."-----
"That was slightly disappointing." Luke said as the end credits showed up on his tiny TV screen.
I lay back on his bed and looked at the roof, "You should read the book, the books much better."
He sighed and pushed himself back from the edge of the bed so his head was perfectly in line with my own.
"I don't read."
"Why not?"
"Too lazy."
I laughed and turned my head to face him. He didn't do the same, his eyes stayed fixed on the roof, taking in the pattern that was lightly molded into it.
"Why are you staring at me?" He asked, facing me after a few seconds.
I felt my cheeks blush and turned away, "I'm not, see?"
"Yeah" he practically whispered, "I see."
"Huh?" I asked, turning back to him.
He hadn't moved, which made our faces inches away from one another.
"You're so beautiful." He groaned.
"Luke." I sighed, sitting up. "You can't do this again."
"Why not?" He asked, staying lying down.
"It's bad enough that you kissed me. If you tried to pull any shit like that again I wouldn't be able to hang out with you anymore, do you get that? I can't do that to Michael. He's my world."
"Why is Michael so important to you?" He snapped.
"He's my boyfriend."
"Is that the only reason?"
"Of course no-"
"God, Sophie Nicole don't you get it? Why can't you see that Michaels not right for you and that I am? He will never be able to pleasure you in the same way that I could. He's never going to make you as happy as I could, and he's never going to want you as much as I do." He threw his arms up above him and let them land back down at his side.
I exhaled deeply, "You only started liking me when I got a boyfriend."
"Is that honestly what you think?" He asked, sitting up beside me and taking my hand, wrapping it around his own.
I pulled it away sharply, "Luke. Stop." I hissed.
He frowned and lay back on the bed.
I looked around his room, which was darker than usual because he shut the curtains. The only light source was coming from the TV, which was too small to supply a proper source of lighting in the room."If you've been into me for so long why did you never do anything about it?" I was feeling quite irritated by now. It surely wouldn't have been too hard for him to just ask me out, if he really did like me as much as he led on.
"Too lazy." he grunted.
"Then why the fuck are you complaining!" I shouted at him. "It was your choice not to ask me out, therefor you are suffering the consequences. If you had just grown a pair of balls and just walked up to me and asked me out then I would probably be yours right now. But now i'm in love with someone else, and that's your fault, not mine."
He sat back up but moved further away from me, "I never said it was your fault." He shouted back."Why didn't you just ask me." I said, lowering my voice.
"I already fucking told you why."
I tilted my head slightly and looked him up and down, "You can be such a dick sometimes"
He glanced in my direction before standing up and turning the TV off, leaving us in complete darkness.
"Yeah well you're a bitch all the time but it never stopped me falling for you."
My stomach knotted and I turned my head in the direction that I thought he was in. "What did you just say?"
"You heard me. It's you, it's always been you, and it always will be. Every night I almost call you, just to say it always will be you."
I rubbed my face in my hands, " Can you turn the light on Luke." I whispered.
"No." He snapped back.
"Why?"
"Because I don't want you to see me cry, that's why." He groaned.
"Luke don't cry, I'm not worth you tears, please just turn the light on and come and sit beside me."
"Beside you." He repeated.
"Yes, Lucas Robert, beside me."
I then heard light footsteps move from a meter or so away from me, and after a small click a piercing light filled the room which caused me to cover my face for a few seconds before looking up at Luke's tear stained face.It broke my heart to see him this way, and to know that I was the cause of it. But it really wasn't my fault that he had never asked me out. I didn't know he had feelings for me, he never talked to me or looked at me, he barely even text me back before I got with Michael, so how was I supposed to know? Besides, I was happy with Michael. I wasn't sure if I could handle Luke's constant mood swings and typical teenage behaviour. Michael was sweet, he treated me like I was special, he wrote me short little poems telling me how much he loved me. I could never imagine Luke doing something kind for me like that. Even though I had never given him the chance.
"Come 'ere you." I gestured.
He pouted and slowly made his way over to me.
He sat down and sniffed, wiping his nose and adjusting his hair. "I'm sorry to do this to you"
"What are best friends for?" I replied, wiping his tears away and wrapping my arms around him.
I could smell his sweet cologne and the softness of his fresh shirt on my face. He wrapped an arm around my back and kissed the top of my head. We sat like this for a few minutes before my phone started ringing in my pocket. I checked the caller ID, it was Michael.
"Luke" I sighed, pulling away from the hug. "I have to take this."
He nodded and I walked to the other side of the room before answering the call.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Hi!" He shouted, he seemed to be in a particularly good mood today.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Can you come over and help my dye my hair? I can't reach the back by myself."
I laughed and turned my back on Luke, "Yeah sure. You want me to come now?"
I heard him drop something, "Shit!" He yelled, "I Just got dye all over the bench."
I cringed, imagining the mess, "Alright I'll be there soon."
I quickly hung up and turned back to Luke.
"It's okay I don't mind if you go."
I smiled and gave him another quick hug, "Thank You Lucas."
I picked up my bag and collected my things before turning towards the door. Just as I reached out to pull the handle, I heard Luke say my name.
"Sophie?"
"What?" I asked, turning around.
"I really did mean that. What I said?"
"What part?" I questioned.
"When I said I loved you."****************
