Liu Wei's POV
After Xiao Yang went home that afternoon, I resigned from the university. Sooner or later the dean would fire me anyway because I punched a student. I didn't care about my job, or about Wang Qing. My mind was full with Xiao Yang.
What is she doing now? I called her but she didn't pick up. I texted her several times but also no reply. I had to come to her and resolved our problem. I just wanted our relationship back like before. A brother and sister. I couldn't bear to be ignored by her any longer.
I went to Xiao Yang's flat. Even though I had her spare key, I never use it unless there was an emergency. I rang the bell several times, but no answer.
It's been 3 days. It wasn't like her. No matter how deep she was in trouble, she wasn't the type who would hide herself or ran from the problem. I had bad feeling about this. I used the spare key to open the door. Only a deafening silence greeted me.
"Xiao Yang? Are you home?" I said into the silence.
Nothing. I could even hear a high pitch noise ringing in my ears.
No one in the living room or kitchen. I knocked the bedroom and open the door. "Xiao Yang?" I said her name softly. My words reverberated in the silent room. Inside, the bed was empty and the duvet on the bed was neatly made.
I went back to the living room and sat listlessly on the sofa. After a minute, I fished my phone out and tried calling her phone. Then a ringtone could be heard. Huh? From the bedroom?
I followed the ringtone, to the bedroom, went over the single bed to the closet. Why would she put her phone in the closet? Carefully I opened the door, inside was a phone illuminated the whole closet with the flat key beside it.
There was something off. Without wasting any time, I called the police. Not long after, three officers came. I explained everything, and they said they'll investigate right away.
One officer said that people rarely went missing without a reason. They searched every possible places, asking the people around for weeks. Her neighbour, campus, workplace, ballet studio, even my workplace. Then they found out about the rumor.
"Sir, people go missing for a wide range of reasons. If it's a disappearance that's out of character, that would raise the risk." I didn't like where this conversation was going.
"There are also those who have decided to leave. Perhaps they've got stresses at home, financial problems or... A relationship problem."
As they stamped that Xiao Yang's case wasn't a high-risk case, the officers acted like the case was closed. I even went to the police office several times a day to pushed them to do their job, but they just brushed me off. Until one day, I decided I'll just do it myself. But still, I found nothing.
I went back to her flat, called her name so many times but the silence answered me. I was in front of her bedroom. My fingers on the door handle, I took a deep breath and opened the door. Hoping that she lay in her bed taking a nap. But it was just all false hopes, the room was empty.
