Chapter 2:
Bria strolls along the brick road then stops for a second, taking a glance over at a little boy giving a little girl a piggyback ride. Both have huge smiles plastered to their face and laughing, making Bria think back to her disastrous childhood. She keeps walking until she approaches a lively yet shabby house with blue sidings and a front door colored a shade of grey. Bria treks up the front steps and through the screen door that is torn slightly in the bottom left corner due to her dog - she's a four year old German Shepherd that jumps in excitement at every little noise she hears.
"Mom?" Bria calls, closing the door behind her .
"Bria, is that you?" She says walking through the hallway and towards the front door.
"Yeah, we won! I smell disgusting though, I should probably take a shower," Bria smiles, giving her a side hug.
"Congratulations Sweetheart! And Yeah, you reek." Her mother replies. "Now, go clean yourself up while I make some dinner. You won't believe what was for sale today in the market... Potatoes and pork!" She says smiling.
"Potatoes and pork!?!" Bria say practically screaming, "I've been dying to have some again."
Bria's mother just smiles and walks into their small kitchen that sits on the cluttered side of things. Bria was practically jumping for joy at the thought of eating potatoes and pork again. Their colony has been living off of basic fruits and vegetables for the last few years after the government had sent out warrants, collecting various foods.
Bria heads up the rickety wooden staircase and into the bedroom. She reaches for her floral bath robe and then heads to her bathroom to turn on the shower. She hangs her bathrobe on one of my three hooks on the wall. While she waits for the shower to warm up, she brushes the knots out of her long hair. When the water is finally warmed up, Bria undresses and gets into the shower.
She stands there for a while, feeling the warm water drip down her body. Bria scrubs the mud off her tanned skin and underneath her fingernails. Picking up the shampoo bottle, she squeeze green gel into her hands and it lets out a lemon scented aroma. She then massages the gel into her hair creating tiny bubbles. By the time she rinse out her hair, her mother is banging on the door telling Bria that her dinner is ready. Bria steps out of the shower and immediately drys off, throwing on a pair faded jean shorts and an old shirt Bria and her old friend Clary and made. It had their hand prints on it, and written under them it says bria and Clary with a heart. A few years earlier Clary and Bria got into a huge fight and then Clary moved away. Bria hasn't seen her since. She will will write her letters once in awhile but Clary has never sent one back.
Bria pulls her hair up into a quick bun and tucks the loose strands of golden brown hair behind her ear. She flicks the light switch off and leaves the bathroom. As she descends down the stairs, she smells the delicious smell of pork cooking on the stove. She makes her way to the kitchen and takes seat at the rickety kitchen table. Soon after, her mother sets down a small plate directly in front of Bria, containing a small portion of baked potato and pork.
"Sorry it's not a lot, Sweetie. This is all they had at the market today." her mothers says in a loving tone, sitting down in the chair next to her.
"Mom, it's great, Really. I'll make a quick run to the Market later and see if I can catch some more." Bria replies, stuffing a fork full of meat into her mouth, talking in muffled breaths.
"Slow down there, Lace. You want to enjoy the food." Her mom laughs, cutting her dinner in slow motions with shaky hands.
Bria picks up her empty plate and handed it to her mother.
