Okay now here is the stuff that is all about the book. If you don't want to read this you don't have to.
White wolves are rare, however they are no different from any other wolf, other than their beauty.
Red wolves exist as well, again same thing. There are elements but they are usually the elders children.
There are also wolves that have special abilities. They are rare and the council usually has them close around them - a few slip past them though. They usually become alpha's or Luna's so the council can keep an eye on them (it's also what the moon goddess does - the council uses this to their advantage).
The mate bond is strong, it can not be broken easily, even by saying a simple rejection. It has to be broken by the elders (moon goddess is included in this), its hard enough to go see them. Since the mate bond is strong there is a very good chance you can find your mate by their smell.
