The Dementors in Harry Potter are based on the depression that J.K. Rowling had when her mother died in 1990.
See I just make a tiny conspiracy theory, J.K. Rowling's mother died of Scerlosis. Scerlosis is known to contribute to Dementia. Dementia sort of written the same way as Dementors. Chocolate is eaten when a person is sad. Chocolate is scientifically proven to make people happy. Dementors hate happiness so that's why the characters eat it in the book. So that's where the name comes from. I made all of this up and it took me an hour to figure out. I just cracked the secret mind of J.K. Rowling.
