Henry grabbed the bag from the clerks hand and slipped on the rainjacket and threw up its hood. He opened the door and was greeted by a huge cold gust of wind. He quickly hid the bag under his coat to shield it from the rain and stepped outside. The rain splattered his face and stung his eyes. He could hear the roar of the massive amounts of water rushing into the gutter. Wherever he stepped the water sloshed into his boots and he had to trudge through the deep puddles. The hospital was only a couple of blocks away, but it would be a long walk through this storm. He saw the glare from the headlights of a car shining through the rain. He waved his hand around wildly and the car pulled over. He read the word "taxi" on the side of the car. Henry quickly clambered in to the vehicle.
"Now what's a kid like you doin' out in this storm?" The driver asked as the pulled back onto the road.
"Just getting a gift for my sister." Henry said flatly as watched the fat raindrops land on his window.
"Oh I unner' stand. Its nice to see that there is still some humanity in dis' world. A little kid like you, out in a big storm, all for is' sister. Anyway, where do you wanna' go?"
"To the hospital please. How much would that be?" He asked as he pulled out his wallet, counting to see how much money he had left.
"Aw shucks, you ain't needing go be worryin' about that. I will do it all for free. I was headin' home anyway." The driver said and they pulled up to a stoplight. They turned a corner into the parking lot of the hospital.
"Thank you sir!" Henry yelled over the howling wind.
"No problem kid. Get home safe!" And just like that the driver pulled out of the parking lot and disappeared down the street.
"I wish I had got his name." He thought as he walked up to the front doors of the hospital. Inside he was welcomed by warm air conditioning and he went up to the front desk.
"Hello sir and how may I help you." A nice little woman at the desk asked. She had her hair pulled up into a tight bun at the nape of her neck, and she wore a small string of pearls sitting right above a simple red dress.
"I'm looking for Katelyn Wood."
"She is in room A36. Just down the hall and to your left." The woman said pointing to yet another set of doors. He thanked the woman and walked down the hall. He felt a sudden pain in his head the caused him to stop walking and press his fingers to his temples. It was the voices, talking, no, arguing. They were bickering at each other and each word made his brain pound against his skull. He struggled to get rid of them but the harder he tried the louder it got. He collapsed on the ground trying to drive the voices out. Until all of a sudden, they stopped.
When he opened his eyes, a bunch of people were staring at him. They whispered to each other in hushed voices. He slowly stood up and walked quickly down the hall. He read the signs. A33. A34. A35. A36. Before he could open the door, a doctor pushed him aside and rushed into the room. He saw his sister lying on the bed. The monitors were beeping like crazy. More doctors ran into the room. All of them were working hurriedly. One doctor grabbed a defibrillator and zapped her chest. She didn't even open her eyes. More doctors now were trying to do something to try and save her and one attached a mask over her face. They were all shouting at each other and then the monitor went blank. All of the doctors were dead quiet. Henry's breath began fogging up the glass on the window which he quickly wiped away. Tears were streaming down his cheak. His shoulders shook with every breath. A doctor slowly walked over and turned off the monitor. One of them pulled a white sheet over her head. He watched her face slowly disappear. Henry was screaming in fury. They couldn't give up, they had to save her! A nurse grabbed his shoulder and he pushed her away as he tried to run into the room, but the doctors grabbed him and held him firmly. He kicked, and screamed, and punched. He shouted nasty words at them but it was no use. He gave up, his limbs went weak, and he just let himself cry. He didn't even bother to wipe away the tears. He just let the roll down his face like when he was a little kid.
