I am jolted from my sleep because I hear screaming and what sounds like things being pushed around. I sit up and flick on my lamp. "What in the world is that?" I said to myself.
"So i'm not a man?!" Is that Gavin? What is going on over there? More crashing and furniture scraping was heard but louder... closer. I flipped back the covers and went to my closet. I know I shouldn't be eavesdropping but this sounds intense. I peeped through the hole and was shocked to see Lyric running across the room with her hands up. She was crying.
"Gavin, honey calm down." He struck her across the face and she dropped to the floor quickly. I could tell that had to hurt. I cringed every time he struck the petite woman.
When Gavin did calm down he tried to pick Lyric off the floor but she eased away. I don't blame her. I don't care how angry you are, never put your hands on a woman. I thought Gavin was a good dude but damn this just made him seem so cowardly. My potential respect for him had been completely tossed away.
It was like a switch had been turned on. He was so different now. "Lyric, i'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I just got so angry."
"Just leave me alone Gavin." Lyric wiped her blood stained lip and looked at my direction. I'm sure she couldn't see me but it scared me enough that I jumped back.
"I am going to fix this. I will be back." I waited in the closet quietly. I held my breath not wanting to corrupt the silence. Then I heard sweeping. Was she really cleaning right now? How can she just go back to doing something so normal when her husband just beat the snot out of her?! She should be pissed. She needs to be packing.
After deliberating with myself, I decided that I going to go over there. If he comes back and she wants to leave, I can call the authorities. I grabbed a few medical supplies to help patch her up. I left out my apartment and knocked on her door.
She barely opened it. " Taylor, this isn't a good time."
"Lyric, I heard... I just came to help. I have band - aides." I dangled them where she could see them. "I'm not judging you."
She opened the door a little more and I finally got to see her better. Her jaw and cheek was slightly bruised. Even though she was dark brown i could definitely see where he had hit her. Her lip was busted and lightly leaking. Overall her face wasn't bad but i'm sure her body would be a different story.
"Taylor, Gavin will be back soon -", I wasn't going to take no for an answer.
"I will be quick." I pushed my way in and grabbed her arm gently. I saw a couch and sat her on it. "Relax." I pushed her hair back started on her lip first. She winced when I dabbed it. Five minutes later she was as good as I could get her without hurting her further.
"You must think so bad of me." she dryly chuckled.
I furrowed my eye brows, "why would I Lyric? You can't control his actions."
She nodded her head in agreement. I can't say that I have been in her shoes but I'm sure it must be hard to love someone who only hurts you in the end. If anything, I admire her commitment to her husband. It truly says a lot about her.
"You know, things used to be so different between Gavin and I. He was the closest thing to perfection I have ever known." She smiled fondly but her smile faded a little. "I don't know what happened, I just wish we could go back." I sat quietly on firm sofa.
"Who was he when you two met?" I asked.
The short time I have known Lyric she has never smiled so brightly as she is smiling right now. She got up and went to a bookshelf placed strategically I'm the living room. Lyric grabbed what looked to be an old high school yearbook. She sat down next to me but closer than before. We were thigh to thigh now. Her perfume was sweet and strong but in a good way.
